Brant County Marriage Register
Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Peter Kerr, Wesleyan Minister, this entire list being for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1860
Rev. Wm. Hay, 28, born Scotland, residing Paris. Parents Robt. and Janet Hay.
Mary C. Stevenson, 21, born and residing Blenheim. Parents Benj. and Catherine Stevenson.
Witness L. Pierre of Dumfries.
On June 19, 1860.
The entire list of marriages was submitted by W. J. Griffith, Wesleyan Methodist minister, but he notes that the first four marriages were performed by Rev. Peter Kerr.
The surname of the witness is almost illegible, but 'Pierre' seems a reasonable interpretation. The difficulty is that no one with the surname Pierre is to be found in either the 1851 or 1861 censuses of the two Dumfries townships, North or South.
|Death||He died on 3 September 1874 at age 42.|
|Burial||He was buried at Hollen Burying Ground Cemetery, Maryborough Twp..|
|Note||As mentioned, under notes for Robert Hay, Robert's obituary shows William Hay as his brother. This is confirmed with baptism information as well as the 1841 census in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland. Birth/baptism information, such as we have, for William's siblings, locates the baptisms in Riccarton, Ayrshire, but does not show the dates. William Hay's birth and baptism record is the exception with both the dates of birth and baptism being present. According to the 1841 Scottish census, he is the youngest surving member of the family at the time.|
William's birth and baptism information is taken from a Familysearch database entitled Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, FHL microfilm 1,041,404.
This shows his parents as Robert Hay and Janet Dick, his date of birth as 2 February, 1832, and his date of baptism as 26 February, 1832.
His date of birth as shown on his gravestone in Hollen Burying Ground is 8 February, 1832. The 2nd of February is probably correct.
See volume 7 of Donald McKenzie's work, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1873-1880, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 153. The obituary is useful for it names Robert Hay of Hollen as his brother; it tells that he married Miss Stephenson (Stevenson) in June of 1860; and it tells that toward the end of his life it was found that he suffered from cancer and that he retired from the Hamilton in June of 1874 and that he then went to a sanitarium in Clifton Springs, New York. The obituary goes on to say that he died on September 3rd,1874, and this agrees with the date of death as it appears on his gravestone in Hollen Burying Ground. The obituary does not say that he died in Clifton Springs, but an Ontario death registration has not been found.
