| Note | Thomas shows his place of birth as Brucefield on his marriage registration. This straddles Tuckersmith and Stanley townships of Huron County. Such information with a village name sometimes rather more 'near' the given village or town. Thomas also shows his father as Alexander Ross. McGill University's Canadian County Atlas Digital Project shows a map of Stanley Township as well as a list of property holders. This is extracted from an 1879 atlas. This shows an Alexander Ross, postal address Brucefield, with three properties in Stanley: lot 14 on the 1st concession (87 acres); lot 20 on the 1st (97 acres); and lot 14 on the 2nd (50 acres). Thomas' marriage to Isabella Maxwell was some 25 years after the date of the above atlas and Thomas is shown in the marriage registration as a merchant in Wingham. Still, it does appear that Thomas was raised on a farm. |
