Mary Ann Harris

ID # 6225, (1811-1871)
FatherSamuel Harris (1788-)
BaptismMary Ann Harris was baptized in 1811 at Westbury, Wiltshire, England.
BaptismShe was baptized on 28 July 1816 at Parish of Westbury, Wiltshire, England.
MarriageShe married George Brothers on 14 May 1850 at Warminster, Wiltshire, England.
There are two documents pertinent to the marriage of George Brothers and Mary Ann Harris. The first appears in the Register Book
of Banns of Marriages Published in the Parish Church of Warminster, Wiltshire and is provided by the Wiltshire Countil and Swindon Borough Council via Ancestry. This appears on page 7 and the year is 1850.

This tells us that the banns of marriage were published between George Brothers and Mary Ann Harris, both of the Parish of Warminster on three Sundays. The first was April 25th, 1850, the second May 5th, and the third May 12th. The first two were read by A. Pane and the third by Henry Mak.

The second document is taken from the book of marriages at the same parish, page 163, 1850 marriages, and again provided by the Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council via Ancestry.

1850 Marriage solemnized by banns in the Parish of Warminster in the County of Wilts.
Married on May 14.
George Brothers, age full, widower, pensioner, residing Pound St.
Mary Ann Harris, age full, spinster, servant, residing Boreham St.
Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Church of England by me Henry Mak.
Witnesses Natl. White and Stephen Barrett.
The bride and groom both signed the form with an X.

Note: That the bride's residence was Boreham Street (or Road) is to some extent a guess. The handwriting is difficult. Looking over other entries in the book, however, this seems likely. Also, the witnesses were probably not personal friends of the contracting couple. Both men show up with some regularity in the marriage book as witnesses for a number of marriages. They may have been in some manner connected to the church and therefore readily available to act as witnesses.

DeathShe died on 9 June 1871 at Adelaide Township, Middlesex County.
NoteThe 1851 census at Warminster in Wiltshire shows Mary Ann's place of birth as Westbury. The census shows Mary Ann's age as 34, but this is probably a bit 'light'. The 1861 census at Adelaide Township in Middlesex County, Ontario, shows her age as 50 and this is probably closer to the truth. She was baptized with three other siblings on July 28, 1816, at Westbury Parish, and there is no evidence that this involved multiple births. Mary Ann is listed first on the baptism page and she may be the oldest of the siblings, though this remains to be researched. All the children are shown as those of Samuel and Ann Harris. Since Samuel Harris, age 73, appears on the same page of the 1861 Adelaide census, indeed immediately following the listing of the Brothers family, we may believe that he is Mary Ann's father. He is shown as a widower. Whether Samuel's wife came to Canada as well, we do not presently know. (There were banns of marriage published in Westbury parish in 1803 for Samuel Harris and Ann Nightengale. Whether they are the parents of Mary Ann Harris we do not know.)

The 1861 census page in Adelaide also shows a Thomas Harris and family. Thomas is probably Mary Ann's brother. This brings us to the pertinent 1851 Adelaide Township census page.

Here also appears Thomas Harris. He and wife Ann have a large family. The 1861 page shows their marriage to be in 1834 and this is unquestionably the same family as listed in 1851. The 1851 page shows the eldest child as Fanny, age 16, and since she and all her siblings were born in Canada, it does appear that Thomas Harris and his bride came almost directly to Canada after their marriage.

Listed below the Thomas Harris family in 1851 is Samuel Harris, age 60, widower. Since this appears to be the same person who is shown as 73 on the 1861 pages and in close proximity to the Harris and Brothers families, this is probably the same person as in the 1851 listing.

As mentioned above, Mary Ann was baptized in 1816 at Westbury Parish with three siblings, all the children of Samuel and Ann Harris. Samuel is shown as a 'shearman' and their residence is given as Westbury Leigh, which is located just outside of Westbury. The three siblings are Jane, John and Joseph.

Mary is present with her husband George and family at the time of the 1861 census in Adelaide Township.

Mary Ann is still present with her husband and family as of the 1871 census in Adelaide. This was begun on April 2nd of the year. She died two months later.
