Murphy, 8 Queens Square, Galt Date of return 7 July 1924 Charles may indeed have been born in Walpole. Perhaps his mother returned to Walpole and was there for his birth. Considering that his two older siblings were born in Beverly Township, this seems unlikely. 1881 as the year of birth, however, isn't reasonable. His sister, Violet Gertrude, we may clearly document as being born on 10 July 1881. To add to the problem, a clear record of the family has not been found in the 1881 census. As well, a clearly identifiable person as Charles Edward Hall has not been found in the census of 1901. This would provide a date of birth for Charles, however accurate or otherwise. We show Charles as being born on 26 March, 1882. This is little better than a guess, but the 1891 census seems to indicate that 1882 would be the likely year of his birth. Yes, his gravestone in Mountview Cemetery does show his birth year as 1881. This, however, is no guarantee. Charles and Julia were married in Guelph in 1904. They were still in Guelph at the time of the 1911 census and with them are children Viola, Stanley, and Gordon. Elizabeth Mae was born in 1913 in Hespeler and the family was probably residing there. By the time of the 1921 census, they are residing at Branchton in North Dumfries Township. With them are children Stanley, Gordon, Elizabeth, and infant Thomas. Viola, shown as age 17, is with her grandmother Hall, now married to William Murphy, at 108 Main Street in Galt. |
