The following information is taken from Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1891-1895, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2011. See page 299

This is an obituary for Mrs. Sarah 'Putnam' and tells that she was the daughter of John and Catharine Bowey. She is said to have beenborn in Niagara in 1847 and that she lost her mother when a child. She was still in Canada at age 14, but then lived in Lewiston, New York for 18 years. She is said to have returned to Niagara Township in 1879 and married Andrew Putnam and to then have joined the Queenston Methodist Church. The obituary states that she died in Niagara Twp. on March 18, 1895, and was buried in the 'Old Niagara Cemetery. She is said to be survived by her husband and a two year old daughter.

Rev. McKenzie has extracted this information from the June 19, 1895 edition of the Guardian.

Death reg. 009882-95 Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co.
Sarah Putman died March 18, 1895. Age 48. Farmer's wife. Methodist. Born Niagara Township. Cause of death double pneumonia. Physician Dr. Trimble. Informant Andrew Putman of Niagara Township. (Andrew has evidently signed the registration himself.)

We may reasonably find Sarah's stay in Lewiston, for she appears there in the 1870 census. A marriage registration for Andrew and Sarah has not been found in Ontario registrations, so it may be that they were married in Lewiston. The best we may say is that the 1881 census in Niagara Township shows Andrew and Sarah together as man and wife. There is no record to say that Andrew and Sarah had other children than Ruth. Ruth came along late in Sarah's child bearing years, but Ruth's birth registration reasonably shows this to be the case. Andrew and Sarah are Ruth's birth parents. James Sheppard and his wife Sarah Putman are Ruth's adoptive parents. The 1901 census shows Ruth to be with the Sheppard's and she is described as Ruth Elizabeth Putman, cousin. In 1911 she is shown as the Sheppard's daughter.

The best information for the moment is that Ruth is a first cousin to her adoptive mother.

Sarah and Andrew are buried in St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery. See notes under Andrew's mother, Rebecca Young. Andrew's death registration shows him to be Anglican, but Sarah died in 1895 and she was evidently at the time Wesleyan Methodist. Typically, they might have been buried elsewhere, but probably held the receipt for a family burial plot at St. Mark's.
