ID # 6525, (1799-1866)
BirthDavid Main was born in 1799 at New Jersey.
MarriageHe married Ailsa Maria Weaver
DeathHe died on 2 August 1866 at Beverly Township, Wentworth Co..
BurialHe was buried at Sheffield Cemetery, Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co..
NoteHe We know little of the background of David Main, other than that he apparently came from New Jersey. This information is provided by Cornell's Beverly Pioneers. Cornell tells that David came to Beverly with two brothers, Adam and Philip. Philip was the father of George Main who appears in this tree. Adam Main, 1786-1870, and his wife Margaret, are buried in Sheffield Cemetery. A place of burial for Philip has not been found. He is probably buried in Sheffield Cemetery, but, if so, there is no surviving stone. Philip appears with son George in the 1871 census in North Dumfries Township. There is a death registration for Philip in North Dumfries. This is dated 1872 and was filed by his son George.

David Main's death predated civil death registrations. His date of death as shown, August 2, 1866, is as extracted from the Dumfries Reformer by Rosemary Willard Ambrose via the auspices of the Waterloo Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The newspaper's date is shown as August 8, 1866, and the place of his death as Beverly Township.

Some land and general research notes for the Main family in Beverly:

The Niagara Peninsula branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides transcriptions of the 1816, 1818 & 1819 Beverly Township assessments. This includes a transcription of the 1825 Beverly Township census. This does show some land acreage for the respective owners, but does not locate the lot or concession.

1816 (This locates Beverly in the Home District, though by this time it is probably already in the Gore District. The Gore District was established in 1816.)

Eleanor Main 100 acres
Adam Main 50 acres
Philip and Samuel Main zero acres

(Note that 1816 is the only assessment wherein we find Eleanor Main. She does not appear in the ones below and assessments for the years 1823-29 and 1831-32 are to hand and she does not appear there.)

1818 for Beverly in the Gore District

Philip Main zero acres
Adam Main 100 acres
David Main 84 acres
John Main 100 acres
(The above transcribed assessment places a question mark after John 'Main', but a copy of the assessment has been collected at the Archives of Ontario and it clearly shows John's family name as Main.)

1819 for Beverly in the Gore District

David Main 100 acres
Philip 40 acres
Adam Main 50 acres
John Main 200 acres in the Niagara District
(John Main has not been found in an assessment after 1819.)

The 1825 Beverly census
(It should be noted that as of this census there were two Weaver households in Beverly.)

Philip Main had 3 males and 1 female under 16 and 2 males a female over 16.
David Main had 3 females under 16 and 1 male and 3 females over 16
Adam Main had 3 males and 2 females under 16 and 2 males and 1 female over 16.

With regard to Eleanor Main who appears in the 1816 assessment and to John Main who appears in the 1818 and 1819 censuses, as mentioned above, they are not found later. They do not appear in a local cemetery. It is possible that John's 200 acres in 1819 represent his and Eleanors. That's in the realm of a guess. It may also at some level represent the purchase of a clergy reserve, though, for the era, this is rather unlikely. If they purchased the land from anyone while the township was in the Home District then the records might well have been destroyed during the War of 1812 and never re-registered. Of course, this is speculation.
