This shows Jane McDonald, daughter of Kenneth, born 2 August, 1854, and baptized on 23 December, 1854, at the Glen Morris Presbyterian Church. Death reg. 001674-96 South Dumfries, Brant Co. Jeannie McDonald died October 8, 1896. Age 42 years, 1 month, 5 days. Born South Dumfries. Presbyterian. Cause of death acute...illeg....tuberculosis. Physician Dr. J. S. Wardlaw. Informant Malcolm McDonald of Glenmorris. Jane's age as given on her death registration, 42 years, 1 month, 5 days, calculates to a date of birth of 3 September, 1854. This is almost certainly incorrect. The Glen Morris church's baptism record, which shows her date of baptism as 23 December, 1854, also shows quite clearly her date of birth as 2 August, 1854. This is probably the more accurate. The available church death records do not run as late a Jane's death. The communion roll does show at least some deaths, but little has been entered for 1896 and then only until June of the year. The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a publication nbr 292, which is entitled Glen Morris Funeral Cards from 1896 to 1955, transcribed by Beatrice Robson. This shows Jennie McDonald, burial date Oct. 8, 1896, from mother's residence at Branchton. 'Near Branchton' would probably be the more accurate. Branchton is in North Dumfries The location of Jane's death is registered as being in South Dumfries. The date death is given as October 8th and this was filed with the township registrar on October 9th, so it is likely correct. She is buried with her parents in Glen Morris church's cemetery. Her name is shown as Jennie and her date of death is also given as October 8th. The phrase 'from mother's residence' implies a funeral so a later date for her burial, perhaps about the 10th, is more likely. That said, Dr. James Sime Wardlaw, a highly respected and compassionate physician, was located in Galt. Back at the time of the death of Jennie, doctors made house calls and this included rural residences. There is evidence of Wardlaw reporting deaths in Branchton and Glen Morris. |
