| Note | Stanley joined the Canadian Army on September 15, 1915. He attested at Niagara Camp, though some documentation states that he signed on at Brantford. (Niagara Camp is apparently the more accurate. This was at present day Niagara-on-the-Lake.) Records for soldiers of the First World War are available from Library & Archives Canada. This tells that Stanley arrived in Great Britain on 28 June, 1916, on the Empress of Britain. He landed at Havre in France on 12 August, 1916. He was appointed a corporal in March of 1917 and a sargeant in April of 1917. He was killed in action on 8 June, 1917. He is commemorated on his parents' gravestone in Glen Morris Cemetery and this tells that he was killed in action at Vimy Ridge. A page, separate from that of his army record, has to do with his burial and is difficult to read, but appears to locate him in Canadian Cemetery No. 2, at Neuville St. Vaast, near Givenchy-en-Gohelle. A clearer description of his burial location as well as a photograph of his gravestone is to be found on Find-a-Grave. This describes the cemetery as Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Neuville-Saint Vaast, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France Plot 6. C. 24. The cemetery is said to be in the Canadian National Vimy Memorial Park. |
