| Note | Andrew was apparently the one child of William and Mary to be born in Canada. Census information for the older children generally states that they came to Canada in 1854. Andrew's birth and death information have it that he was born in Dumfries Township. By the time of his birth in 1854, Dumfries had been divided into North and South portions, the 7th concession being the border. The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has some baptism records for the Glen Morris church, a Presbyterian church at the time, (see OGS publication 163). This dates Andrew's birth to November 21, 1854, and his baptism to December 23, 1854. Andrew is the youngest child in the family at the time of the 1861 census in South Dumfries. The family is still in South Dumfries at the time of the 1871 census where Andrew is shown as 16. Be the time of the 1881 census, the family is in Blenheim Township, Oxford County. He is evidently with his parents, though by this time he is married to Catherine and they have with them two daughters, Mary Jane, age 3, and Grace, 5 months. In the 1891 census at Blenheim, Andrew is with his father William and sister Agnes. The three of them are shown as widowed. There are children shown as being the grandchildren of William. Agnes has with her her son William Hamilton. Andrew and sister Agnes are together in Bright Village at the time of the 1911 census. Death reg. 023735-14 Blenheim Twp., Oxford Co. Andrew Harkness died May 10, 1914, at Bright, Ont. Age 59 yrs., 1 mo., 19 dys. Born at Dumfries, Ont. (South Dumfries, Brant Co.) Farmer. Widower. Parents William Harkness and Mary McLellan. Physician A. J. Wilson, Plattsville, Ont. Informant Grace Harkness Menzies. A date or place of burial for Andrew is not shown, but he is buried in Chesterfield Cemetery per a photograph of his gravestone which is to be found on Find-a-Grave. |
