Brant County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by John Dunbar, a minister of the Canada Presbyterian Church (Glen Morris) for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1861

Levi Bawtinheimer, 26, born and residing South Dumfries. Parents Jas. Bawtinheimer and Charlotte Kelly.
Isabella Stewart, 18, born and residing South Dumfries. Parents Thos. Stewart and Hannah Smith.
Witnesses Smith Bawtinheimer and Andrew Stewart, both of South Dumfries.
On 22 Feby 1861.

Levi's age has a check mark over it and though at first glance appears to be 20, is probably 26. This conclusion is to be found comparing his age as of the 1851 census in South Dumfries. Also, Levi's immediately younger brother is Smith Bawtinheimer. The name is borderline illegible on the marriage record, though within the bounds of the 'guessable'. The 1851 census confirms the name.

County marriages are almost never specific about the location of the marriage. The clergyman was located at the Glen Morris church, but he may well have conducted the marriage at the home of the bride's parents. This was a common enough custom.

A notice of the marriage was placed in the 27 February, 1861, edition of the Dumfries Reformer. This has been transcribed by Rosemary Ambrose. Betimes, this will provide the marriage venue, but with Levi and Isabella's marriage it simply names the parties and the date.
