Witnesses C. J. Becker and Edith J. Laird, both of Esquesing. On 24 May, 1886, by Wm. Hicks. There are several things to say about this registration. The handwriting is difficult to put it kindly. Rev Hicks submissions to the town clerk at Brampton are mainly for December, but he has earlier submissions wherein a marriage is out of sequence with the other submissions, so while there may be an error, a May marriage is probably correct. Again, taking the handwriting into consideration and comparing the clerk's rendering of the letter T with other entries, Rowland does show his place of birth as Troy, though you would be hard put to identify it as such. And this should be correct, for a land transaction places Bryce McRoberts in Beverly in this time frame. Add to that, there is a baptism record for Rowland Bryce McRoberts (Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms) in Beverly. His date of birth is shown as 9 December, 1850, in Beverly. Considering what we may infer as to his father's locale per a land transaction, Troy is probably close enough. See notes for his father, but Bryce was probably post master at Troy during this time frame (though Canada Posts' archives argue otherwise.) Or to cut to the chase, Rowland's birth will have been in Troy, Beverly Township of Wentworth County, not Brant County, which was next door to Wentworth. The entry for Ann's mother as Margaret Brush echoes that of Rowland's mother and is probably a mistake. While not common, such mistakes did happen. Finally, the above is shown as an 1887 marriage registration. The town clerk did not return the page to his superiors until February of 1887 and this is how it will be indexed by the Archives of Ontario. |

Pace of death 132 Galley Ave. (the handwriting is a bit questionable to do with the street name, but the 1918 Toronto City Directory shows his residence as 132 Galley Ave.) Age 67. Caroline, 132 Galley Ave. Familysearch has indexed burial pages from 1919 Prospect Cemetery as presented by Familysearch in cooperation with the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This tells that Rowland's remains were placed in the vault at Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, on February 1 of the year. They were then moved on March 13, 1919 to Norval, Ontario. More specifically, he was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, in the village of Norval, Esquesing Township, Halton County. Here, he is buried with his wife Anne Wansbrough, who died in 1936, and his daughter Una McRobert McClement, who died in 1942. The list of children for Rowland and Ann is initially taken from the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Registrations of birth have been found for Una, Gladys, William Alexander, and Ralph The 1901 census shows a son Wray. (He is actually Rowland Ray McRoberts.) The handwriting is such that he appears to be born in the same year as William, though the handwriting is difficult to read on this point. Ray is shown arbitrarily as being born in 1892, however we may with some confidence record that he is indeed a member of the family based on his marriage registration to Florence Switzer. See their marriage registration. 1892 is probably the correct year of Ray's birth. |
