| Note | Page 99 in your researcher's copy of the transcription of The Husbands of Halton shows an obituary for Israel Jeater. This does not tell us the name of the newspaper in question, but must have originated with a clipping, the date of which is shown as February 27, 1912. Since Israel died on February 19, 1913, we must believe the year of the clipping, 1912 as shown, is a readability problem or it is a typographical error. Unquestionably, based on two death registrations and a cemetery transcription, Israel died in 1913. The obituary tells that Israel Jeater was born in Kent County, England, on 5th September, 1828, and this may be correct, though it will be seen that there was quite reasonably a Dorking, Surrey, connection. Per the obituary, Israel's parents died 'soon after reaching this country,' and that Israel was then adopted by William Van Norman. This is also probably correct, but Israel's marriage registration shows his parents as James and Eliza Jeater and this will be certainly correct. Here, see notes for father James Jeater. The obituary tells that Israel received a 'liberal education' at Baldwin College in Berea, Ohio, and then spent some teaching before turning to farming. A record for Israel Jeater in the 1851 Canadian census has yet to be found. He appears in the 1861 agricultural census for Nelson Towship, Halton County. He has yet to be found in the every person census in Nelson. The agricultural census, however, describes him as being on lot 4, concession 1, SDS (South of Dundas Street). The property is said to consist of 50 acres. Since Israel's name does not appear on an abstract index for this property, it is likely that he was leasing there. He also appears in the 1871 every person census for Nelson. There was no agricultural census for that census or later ones. By 1881, the family is in Huron Township of Bruce County. (A comment here on the above Nelson Township property. Per the abstract index, 100 acres (half of C1-L4) was sold to Jane Husband, widow, relict of George Husband, and Robert Husband as joint tenants, in September of 1884. The Husband family does not appear to have a previous history on this property. George Husband was a brother of Margaret Husband Jeater. Robert as shown on the abstract index will be George and Jane's son. ) For the following, see Onland.ca: Huron Township, Bruce County, Concession A, lot 61 Bruce(03), Huron, Book 144, Concession A, lot 61, page 2 2382 B & S Dec 2/78 Dec 9/78 Isabella & Saml Creech to Israel Jeater, 65 acres. On April 8, 1906, Israel and Margaret sold this property to their son Wm. H. Jeater. B & S = Bargain and Sale. Essentially, Israel and Margaret purchased this 65 acres of lakeshore property in 1878 and sold it to their son William in 1906. William did not file the deed for registration until 1913. Death reg. 009453-13 Huron Twp., Bruce Co. Israel Jeater died Feb. 19, 1913, at Lot 61, Concession 12, age 84 yrs., 5 mos., 14 days. Widower. Cause of death pneumonia. Physician Jas. A. Macdonald, M.D., Kincardine. Informant W. H. Jeater, Kincardine. More accurately, Israel's township lot was 61 in Concession A of the Lake Range. This borders an extension of Concession 12. There was a second registration of death filed at Kincardine. This essentially repeats the above, though it is not very legible. A page appended to the transcription of the diary of Henry Husband lists the names of the children of Israel and Margaret. One, not listed here, is shown as Frederick Charles, an infant. When Frederick was born or where he was buried has not been found. |
