Matilda Husband died 9th May, 1878, age 21 years, 8 months. Dressmaker. Methodist. Born Township of Walpole. Cause of death abcess of liver and passage of gall stones. Physician David Robertson. Informant Richard Husband, father of the above, harness maker, Milton.

Beyond Matilda's death registration, there was an obituary in the Christian Guardian edition of November 27, 1878, page 383. This is to be found in Vol. 7, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1873 - 1880, Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, page 175.

This describes Matilda as the 2nd daughter of Richard and Ellen Husband and tells that she was born on November 13, 1856, in Walpole Township (Haldimand County). She died at her father's residence in Milton.

Milton Pioneer Cemetery was transcribed by the Halton & Peel branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1976 and the recording we have of the inscription of Matilda's stone was done at that time. The cemetery was updated in 1981 and her stone was apparently missing at that time. At the beginning of the transcription it is told that the cemetery was found in terrible condition with many broken stones merely tossed to the back of the cemetery, many of them quite broken.

A historical society at some point got involved and the cemetery has very much been cleaned up. Broken stones that could not be re-erected were placed in concrete. This has not restored the stones for Matilda and her brother George. Such photo essays as are available, CanGenWeb and Find-a-Grave, do not have pictures of the stones, so we only have the original transcription to work with.
