Jacob Blous...(could be anything) and Mearcea Buckborough, both of Beverly, married by publication (the reading of banns), on Jan 28th, 1846. Witnesses Thomas Watson and James Buckborough. The handwriting of the recording clerk for the above is a bit of a mess, though he was probably trying to interpret the handwriting of the reporting clergyman. This marriage has also been reported in the February 26, 1846, edition of the Canada Christian Advocate. This is a marriage notice saying briefly that Jacob Blasdale married Mercy Buckberrough, both of Beverley, on Jan. 28, 1846, by Rev. W. D. Hughson. This is to be found in Vol. 3 of Rev. Donald A. McKenzie's work More Notices from Methodist Papers, 1830-1857, Global Heritage Press. The Blasdell name is to be found variously spelled, especially in older records. Likewise the Buckberrough name. Beverly Township (of Wentworth County) was also occasionally spelled as Beverley and this carries its own confusion. |

| Note | The 1851 every person census for Beverly has not survived. The agricultural census has and it shows Jacob Blasdell on lot 14 of the 2nd concession with 50 acres. This is not reflected in the available Abstract Indexes of land transactions. This lot was owned by John Gamble, a Beverly notable who lived in the vicinity of the village of Troy. An abstract index for lot 14 of the 2nd is not to hand. It is possible that Jacob was present on this property and leasing. The 1861 agricultural census shows Jacob on lot 14 of the 1st concession and this agrees with the abstract index information. Jacob purchased this from Isaac Blasdell in February of 1858 and, casting back to the 1851 census, Isaac Blasdell owns lot 14 on the 1st, so this will be correct. Jacob Blasdell and Jessie Graham Ritchie were married in 1864 and as of the 1871 census, they are living in Beverly with children of both marriages present as well as a son Donald, born in 1865, and apparently Jacob and Jessie's son, who died in 1879. The enumerator of the 1881 census made a fine mess of Jacob's surname and so it is poorly indexed. He is best found by searching for Jessie's son John Ritchie, whose name is written as Richey. The household consists of only three persons. Jessie is still in Beverly as of the 1891 census. She is shown as a widow. A record of death or place of burial for Jacob has not been found. A note here: The 1871 census in Beverly shows the Jacob Blasdall household. with children of the two previous marriages - Blasdell and Ritchie. Included in the Ritchie list is Alfred Ritchie, or at least apparently with the surname Ritchie, age 15. Alfred does not appear with the Blasdells in the 1861 census in Beverly Township or with the Ritchies in the 1861 census in Grimsby Township. He has not been found in later Canadian censuses, but does appear in U.S. censuses, particularly in Sanilac County, Michigan. An Alfred James Blasdell, an elderly man, died as the result of injuries received while being struck by a car in Flint, Michigan in October of 1941. His death registration shows his date of birth as December 2, 1855. It states that he was born at Lynden, Ontario, and that his parents were Jacob Blasdell and Myrtle Buckberry. He was to be buried in Greenwood Cemetery, in Sandusky, Michigan. The information for Alfred as it appears on the death registration was provided by Daniel Blasdell, his son. Find-a-Grave does not show a photo of his gravestone, but does add a brief newspaper clipping which tells of his recent history as a resident of Michigan as well as information for his children, which generally agrees with available U.S. census information. The newspaper clipping does include that his middle initial was 'J' and, as well, the associated information provided by Find-a-Grave tells that his middle name was James. Find-a-Grave's associated commentary debates his parentage. And what follows is entirely a guess and may be disregarded as wished. A search was done, however, for an Alfred of comparable age in the 1861 census and it is interesting that in the household of a Robert and Mary Ann Chambers of Beverly Township there is an Alfred Jameson, age 6. The Chambers are young, 32 and 23 respectively, and can't have been married long, for they have a son William, age 2. With them and listed immediately beneath William's name are Jason Jameson, age 5, and Alfred Jameson, age 6. The Chambers family is in Medonte Township of Simcoe County as of the 1871 census. They by then had more children, but not a sign of Jason or Alfred. To this point no information has been found to support the notion that Alfred James Blasdell was adopted by Jacob and Jessie, though it is a reasonable conclusion. Whether he was the same persons as Alfred Jameson in Beverly with the Chambers is unknown. One thing, however, does strengthen the matter Robert Chambers married Mary Ann Rachar in Brant County, next door to Beverly Township of Wentworth County, in 1858. The couple are shown as Baptists in the 1861 census. A George Racher (so spelled) is buried in Westover Baptist Cemetery in Beverly Township. He died in 1894 at age 80. George's grave is surrounded by those of Jamiesons. This has at least the look of a Rachar connection to the Jamiesons of Beverly. Which doesn't help us with the connection of Alfred to the Blasdells, but it's a place to start. |
