Philip Henry Wiggins
ID # 7966, (1855-1938)
| Father | Robert Wiggins (1819-) |
| Mother | Martha Maria Merigold (1823-1885) |
| Birth | Philip Henry Wiggins was born on 21 February 1855 at Woodhouse Township, Norfolk Co., Canada West. |
| Baptism | He was baptized on 10 May 1855 at Woodhouse Township, Norfolk Co.. |
| Marriage | He married Lucretia Matilda Courtnage on 11 August 1881 at Walpole Township Haldimand Co., Ontario. Mrge reg. 003811-81 Walpole Twp., Haldimand Co. Philip Henry Wiggins, 26, bachelor, farmer, Baptist. Born Burford Twp., residing Woodhouse Twp. Parents Robert and Martha Wiggins. Lucretia Matilda Courtnage, 24, spinster, Baptist. Born and residing Walpole. Parents 'Jane' and Eliza Courtnage. Witnesses Lewis S. Smith and Emeline Smith, both of Waterford, Ont. On August 11th, 1881, at Walpole, by John Stewart. The handwriting on the above registration is not clear on all points. 'Jane' is written for Lucretia's father, but Lucretia is buried in the Courtnage burial plot in Hartford Baptist Cemetery in Townsend Township, Norfolk County, and it's evident that his name was James. Also, the handwriting for the bride's first name does appear to be 'Lucretia'. Her gravestone in Hartford Baptist Cemetery transcribes her name as Lauretta. Almost all other records show her by her middle name of Matilda. The Canadian Baptist edition of August 18, 1881, however, records her marriage thus: At the residence of the bride's father, Walpole on August 11th, by Rev. John Stuart, B.A., Mr. Philip H. Wiggins of Burford to Miss Lucretia M. Courtnage of Walpole. It would appear that her correct name was Lucretia. |
| Marriage | He married Melinda Caroline Read on 5 November 1890 at Burford Twp., Brant Co.. Mrge reg. 001422-90 Burford Twp., Brant Co. Philip Henry Wiggins, 40, widower, carter, Baptist. Born Woodhouse, residing Brantford. Parents Robert and Martha Wiggins. Melinda Caroline Read, 36, spinster, Methodist. Born and residing Burford. Parents Henry and Mary Ann Read. Witnesses John Read and Mary Read, both of Burford. On 5th November, 1890, at Burford, by Robert Lawson Ockley. |
| Death | He died on 30 December 1938 at Brantford, Brant Co, Ontario, at age 83. |
| Burial | He was buried on 2 January 1939 at Burford Congregational Cemetery. |
| Note | Five of the children of Martha and Robert Wiggins were baptized the same day, 10 May, 1855, at Woodhouse Township, per page 141 of the Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms. The whole page shows the baptisms to be in the Talbot District, though by 1855 this was actually Norfolk County. Philip Henry Wiggins date of birth on his baptism record is shown as 21 Feb, 1855, at Woodhouse Township. Death reg. 009014-39 Brantford, Brant Co. Phillip Wiggins died at Brantford General Hospital on December 30, 1938. Residence 367 Colborne St., Brantford. Irish. Widower. Born Pt Dover, Feb. 21 (year not given). Age 82 (or 83 - overwritten). Teamster. Father Robert Henry Wiggins, place of birth Toronto, Ireland. Mother Margaret Marigold, born Ireland. Physician's name illegible. Informant Mrs. Blackwell, 367 Colborne St., daughter. Burial Burford on Jan. 2, 1939. The above death registration has problems, but Philip's place of birth as shown, Port Dover, may not be so far off. Philip is recorded on his Wesleyan Methodist baptism information as being born and baptized in Woodhouse Township. Woodhouse borders Lake Erie and Port Dover is in this township. A more accurate statement would probably be that Philip was born 'near Port Dover'. After that, the 1851 and 1861 censuses show the place of birth of Philip's father, Robert Wiggins, as being in Ireland. The inclusion of the place name Toronto may involved some confused memory of Philip's mother's family having been in Toronto Township of Peel County. (Best your researcher can do for a guess.) Documentably, Philip's mother was Martha Maria Merigold. |
