| Note | Valentine and Katarina are are found in the 1861 census in Normanby Township. They have not been found in the 1851 census. Not all of the 1851 census has survived, but the family apparently did not come to Canada until the mid 1850s. The 1901 census shows son Leonard's arrival in Canada in 1855. Valentine Jr. appears on the same page, but the year of his arrival is unreadable. The 1911 census shows Leonard's arrival as 1854. As most of the Valentine and Katarina's children were quite young in the mid 1850s, it's safe to say that the family came to Canada together. The present list that we have for their children is taken from the 1861 census and it's entirely possible that there are more and it may be that not all children came to Canada. Death reg. 005549-88 Normanby Twp., Grey Co. Valentine Feick died 7th April, 1888. Age 81 years. Farmer. Evangelical Association. Physician none. Informant Geo. Finkbeiner, clergyman, Alsfelt (Alsfeldt). The post office at Alsfeldt existed from 1875 to 1915. The cemetery where Valentine is buried was known as the Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery. It was later known as the Ayton United Church Cemetery. The available transcription, as done by the Grey and Bruce County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, tells that it was, at the time of transcription, administered by the Alsfeldt United Church. As mentioned above, Valentine and Katharina may have had more children to enter on the list. One person that it's tempting to add is to be found in a transcription of St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Normanby Township. She is shown as: Margaretha Nee Feick, wife of Heinrich Weppler, born in Mershansen Grand Ducy Hessen 5 January 1834 died 4 March 1873, 39 years 1 month 27 days. Unquote Margaretha and Heinrich appear in Normanby in the 1861 census. They are shown as both born Germany. They have with them 4 children, the oldest being age 5. This would imply a marriage year of approximately 1855. What makes it tempting to add Margaretha to the list is that she and Heinrich have, by the time of the 1871 census, a daughter named Catharine and a son named Valentine. A difficulty here is that Valentine Feick and Katharina Schul had a daughter, Anna Margaret Feick, who was born approximately 1845 and who married Adam Grein. Add to that, no death registration for Margaretha Feick Weppler has been found and no marriage registration has been found in either the District or County marriage registers. Probably, one does exist in a church record. At a guess, Margaretha Feick, wife of Heinrich Weppler, is indeed a daughter of Valentine Feick and Katharina Schul. The conflict of names for Margaretha born in 1834 and Anna Margaret born approximately 1845, probably represents some cultural naming format of which your researcher is totally unaware. Perhaps evidence linking Margaretha Feick Weppler to Valentine and Katharina will yet be found. |
