| Note | William Witter and his wife, Lydia Wismer, are buried together in Quantztown Cemetery in Markham. Durham Region branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has transcribed this cemetery and they show the date of William's death as it appears on his gravestone as 11 September, 1874. There is evidence that dates his death to September of 1870 and we must believe the error in transcription to relate to a worn stone. An actual death registration has not been found. There is however the 1871 census which has at the end of each census section a page for deaths in the previous 12 months. This shows William Witter to be deceased in September of what will be the previous year. Certainly Lydia, William's wife, does appear in the 1871 census in Pickering Township. She is with son Asa and his family and she is shown as a widow. It isn't reasonable that William died in 1874 as per the transcription. The only confusing aspect of the 1871 page of deaths is that it does show William's place of birth as Germany. The 1851 and 1861 censuses show his place of birth as the U.S. The short list of children for William and Lydia is taken, mostly, from the 1851 census in Pickering Township. There were probably others, but only Darius has thus far been found. Son Darius is resident in Markham Township at the time of the 1851 census. Darius is at the least living near two Wismer uncles, Asa and Jacob. He may be living in Jacob's household. This isn't entirely clear. We take Darius' relationship to William and Lydia based on burial information as it appears in a transcription of Quantztown Cemetery in Markham. His parents, who died in later years, are buried next to Darius. |
