| Note | Birth reg. 035606-16 Dawson Twp., Manitoulin District. Oakley John Joyce was born June 23, 1903, at Manitowaning. His parents were married on December 18, 1900, at Sault Ste. Marie. Parents Charles Joseph Joyce, farmer, Meldrum Bay, and Margaret Walker. No physician's name is given. The informant was Charles Joseph Joyce of Meldrum Bay. Manitowaning is in Assiginack Township. Technically, the above birth registration should have been filed in Assiginack years earlier. Oakley was born in 1903, but this was in effect a delayed registration of birth, for it was filed on December 21, 1916. The local registrar then sent this on to his higher level, but not until January 9, 1917. The Archives of Ontario has this birth listed in its 1916 birth registrations. The AO has been behind in its digitization of its birth, marriage and death registrations. It is understood that they have been making an effort to catch up. It may be that the above registration, in terms of date filed, may represent something of that. Their website has yet to make that official. Oakley's birth registration is listed immediately before that of his brother, Ray Wilfred Joyce (handwriting issues with the name). Ray was born June 5, 1915, in Dawson Township. Something prompted Charles to attend at the registrar's in December of 1916. At a guess this was to file the birth registration for Ray, but the registrar probably asked Charles if he had anyone else to registrar and so Oakley's birth information was probably given as well. For the moment, the census records for the Joyce family have yet to be examined to see just how many children they might have had. |
