Johnstown District Marriage Register 1801-1851

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev'd. James Elliott, Wesleyan Methodist, for the year ending March 24, 1848.

John Knapp of Montague Township in the Johnstown District to Jane Scott of Oxford Township in the Johnstown District
On 24 March, 1847, by banns.
Witnesses James Guest and James McCrea.

The above is put together somewhat patchwork. The page image is available, but is quite toned and not easily readable on all points. Add to that, the Archives of Ontario has a PDF form listing the District Marriages volumes and reels and each page is labeled with the appropriate dates. 1801-1851 are the years being covered as indicated on the label for page image; The AO's index shows the volume to be for 1799 to 1850.

The page number is barely readable and the names of the witnesses are so toned they are difficult to decipher. That James Guest and James McCrea are the names of the witnesses we may take as correct with some confidence. This district's marriages were transcribed in the year 2000 by Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai. This has been published by Global Heritage Press of Milton (now of Ottawa), in 2013. It is available in print or digitized format. We may say with some safety that the transcribers had access at the AO to the original volumes and, with a bit of squinting, we may safely say that they have correctly transcribed the rather badly toned names of the witnesses. We will take their word for it as to the page number.

John Knapp's residence, Montague Township was in what was later Lanark County; Jane Scott's residence, Oxford Township, was in what was later Grenville County. The two locales aren't far apart.

DeathShe died on 5 May 1905 at Merrickville, Grenville County, at age 79.
BurialShe was buried at Union Cemetery, Merrickville, Wolford Twp., Grenville County.
NoteDeath reg. 016294-05 Merrickville, Grenville Co.
Mrs. Jane Knapp died May 5, 1905, age 80. Residence West Rd. Way. Born Beckwith Twp., Methodist. Cause of death measles one week. Physician Dr. D. Bedell. Informant Wm. Scott.

Jane's place of birth is shown in her death registration as Beckwith. When she was born in 1825, this was apparently in the Bathurst District, though for some later years it was apparently in the Johnstown District. In later years, once the county administrations came into effect, Beckwith Township became a part of Lanark County.
