| Note | Birth reg. 032254-76 Galt, Waterloo Co. Bessie Gillies born 2 April, 1876. Parents Peter Gillies, carriage maker, and Elizabeth Hogg. Physician Dr. Brown. Informant Peter Gillies, carriage maker, Galt. The above registration names the child as Bessie. It was filed 27 June, 1876, by Peter, and the family was probably in the habit of calling the child Bessie. At a guess, her full and proper name was Elizabeth and, were a baptism to be found, this would probably be confirmed. Death reg. 014797-78 Galt, Waterloo Co. Bessie Gillies died 10 February, 1878, at Galt, age 1 year, 10 months. Cause of death diptheria. Physician Dr. Brown. Informant A. Gillies, manufacturer, Galt. Bessie's death registration was filed with the town clerk on 11 February, 1878. We do not have a place of burial for Bessie. At the time of her death, the Galt city cemetery was not yet known as Mountview, but as the Galt Cemetery, which had been established in July of 1868. This cemetery was transcribed by the Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Also examined by them were burial cards in the cemetery's office. If a card existed, but no stone found, then this was recorded by the transcribers. A card for Bessie who died in 1878 does not appear and there is no record of her on Peter and Elizabeth's gravestone in Section 4 of Mountview. Bessie was almost certainly buried in Galt Cemetery. What was not a certainty in early days is that every burial got recorded. For an example of this, elsewhere in this tree see notes for George Himes, the son of John and Lavinia. The transcription of Peter and Elizabeth's gravestone does not have infant Bessie. There is a footstone for a Bessie, but there are two Elizabeth's buried in the same plot and no evidence, agewise, that one was an infant. The informant in Bessie's passing was A. Gillies, manufacturer, Galt. Just who he was remains for the moment elusive. |
