| Note | To hand is a transcription of the stones in the pergola at what is now St. Andrews Park on the west side of Cambridge/Galt. This transcription was done by Norma Huber of the Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. For our purposes, the pertinent transcription reads: C-2-14 In memory of/ Helen Wallace late/ spouse to John Gillespie/ who died on the 20th July 1841/ aged 28 years/ Also of Jane Adams/ his wife/ who died on the 28th April/ 1851/ aged 28 years When the Galt Cemetery (now Mountview) was established in July of 1868, at some point shortly thereafter, the two Presbyterian cemeteries, St. Andrews and that of First Church, stopped receiving burials. It wasn't until perhaps the mid 1880s that a major transfer of burials was begun and family connections of First Church burials had remains removed to Mountview - some, not all. Norma evidently believed that most St. Andrews burials were removed as well, but this has been disputed. At any rate, John's two wives were buried together in St. Andrews. John Gillespie died on 25 November, 1872, in Galt, and was buried in the Galt Cemetery, established as such, in July of 1868. (The cemetery was not renamed as Mountview until 1886.) A transcription of Section 2 of Mountview was done by the Waterloo-Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1984. This has John's name on the gravestone as well as that of his second wife Jane Adams and this dates her death to April 28,1851. This was long before the Galt Cemetery was established. Were her remains transfered to the Galt Cemetery from St. Andrews? Or is her name simply commemorated on John's gravestone. Also appearing on the stone are the names of John and Jane's daughter Isabella and also the names of some grandchildren of John and Jane. If Helen Wallace had children, no information about them has been found. |
