Brant County Marriage Register

Excerpted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Thos. L. Davidson, a Minister of the Baptist Denomination, for the year ending December 31, A.D. 1861.

Chas. Burrill, 25, born and residing Onondaga, parents Wm. and Mary Burrill.
Rebecca Birkitt, 20, born and residing Brantford Twp., Parents Wm. and Ellen Burkitt.
Witnesses John Davis and Mary A. E. Gill, both of Newport.
On April 3rd, 1861, by licence.

At the times of birth for Charles and Rebecca, Onondaga Township and Brantford Township were both in the Gore District. By the time of their marriage the old District system was done with and both townships were in Brant County.

An obituary exists for Charles Burrill in Vol. 12 on page 65 of Donald McKenzie's Obituaries From the Christian Guardian, 1896-1900, and as published by Global Heritage Press in 2013. This provides us with Charles' date of birth, 13 December, 1835, and also dates his marriage to Rebecca as being on April 3, 1861. This in turn is helpful in at least finding the correct page in the Brant County Marriage Register. The handwriting on the page is not easy to read.

Charles Burrill died April 19, 1896. Age 65. Farmer. Born Ontario. Methodist. Physician E. E. Harvey, M.D. Informant Allen Burrill, Holbrook.

At the time of his father's death, son Allen was probably still on the family farm in North Norwich Township. He shows his location as Holbrook, but this was probably his postal address. According to Floreen Carter's 1986 Ghost & Post Offices of Ontario, page 412, there was a post office named Holbrook in North Norwich Township from 1867 to 1913. (Other information shows a post office at Holbrook until 1918.)

Interestingly, post office records show Allen J. Burrill as postmaster at Holbrook from 1905 to 1908.
