Parents Isaac B. Merritt, born New Brunswick; Sarah Kelly, born Brant Co. Physicians Hicks & Knight, Brantford. Informant Leslie B. Metcalf, 108 Grant St., son. Burial Fairfield, Ontario Given that Mary Jane's father was born in New Brunswick and her mother in Brant County, it seems unlikely that she was born in Scotland, United Kingdom. Her marriage register places her birth in Burford Township. Almost certainly, both Burford and Scotland are correct. The village of Scotland sits on the border of Burford and Oakland Township. The post office at Scotland was established in 1852. It's probably an over-interpretation to say that Scotland was the Merritte family's postal address, but this may actually be correct. |
