| Note | We first find James E. Smith recorded in the U.S. census of 1880. He is with the family in Big Prairie, Newaygo County, Michigan, said to be born in Michigan and said to be age 12. His parents, William and Margaret, are shown in the 1870 census at Big Prairie and no children are shown with them. According to the 1880 census, young James should have been present in 1870, perhaps as much as age 2. Since he is not there, we will show him as being born in 1870 until further information is found. |
