MotherMargaret Bolton (1795-)
BaptismMary Vrooman was baptized in 1838 at Canada.
MarriageShe married John Smith.
A marriage record for Mary Vrooman and John Smith has not been found. We have, however, partial documents from Jo Daviess County, one from Book 24 of Deeds, page 390, the other unidentified, that shows a Mary E. Smith and John Smith, both in a list of claimants relating to the estate of George L. Vrooman versus Sarah Vrooman, administrator. These documents are from 1866 and 1867. Since Mary E. Smith and, apparently, husband John, are shown in the list of children and grandchildren having claims on the estate it seems reasonable to conclude that Mary is the daughter of George and Margaret Vrooman who appears with George in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Jo Daviess County.

NoteWe find Mary with George L. Vrooman in the 1850 census in Millville, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. For some reason, all immediate family members appearing on this page are shown as being born in New York.

The 1860 census in Courtland Township, Jo Daviess County, shows George and his children as being born in Canada. Mary is also shown in this census in Courtland Township and as being born in Canada, and is a house servant and in the household of James Powers.

We do not know with any certainty what happened to Mary. The one reasonable candidate appearing in the 1870 census at Fond du Lac, Tazewell County, Illinois, is a Mary Smith, age 31, born in Canada, keeping house, and married to John Smith, age 32, coal miner, born England. With them are son Elmer, age 5, born Illinois; daughter Rosetta, age 3, born Illinois; and son William, age 1, born Illinois. This family has not, thus far, been found in the 1880 census.
