| Note | A descendant of George Laws Vrooman believed that his first wife's name was Margaret. This was a story in the family and it can now be confirmed that her name was Margaret Bolton. Her parents were Abraham Boulton and Leah Sax, or Sachs. The Boltons are believed to have been resident in Edwardsburgh Township and Elizabethtown. Abraham, George and Margaret's oldest son, had the middle name Bolton. This information we find in his death registration in Meade County of South Dakota in 1914. On GSU105553, a microfilm found at the Archives of Ontario, we find in Volume A, page 171, nbr. 9278, a transaction for the sale of concession 2, lot 20, Communication Road Survey, in Harwich Township. This was originally 200 acres granted to Margaret Bolton as the daughter of a Loyalist by the Crown in 1818. This was sold by Margaret Vrooman to David Morden in 1826. The text refers to the parties of the first part (the vendors) as George Vrooman and Margaret Vrooman, daughter of Abm. Boulton of Elizabethtown. One of the witnesses to the transaction was James Vrooman of Brock Township. Interestingly, the transaction itself is followed by an affadavit signed by James Vrooman of Brock. Though the property was sold to David Morden in 1826, the sale wasn't registered until 1844. By this time the property had been seized by the district sherriff. Since George and Margaret were in Illinois by 1844, we have to guess that it fell to James Vrooman to sort out any legal difficulties. Based on information in the 1840 census at Winnebago County in Illinois, Margaret was still living. By the time of the 1850 census in Jo Daviess County, she is evidently deceased. One further point of note is that the journey to Jo Daviess Township in Illinois was likely of the nature of an extended family venture. The 1850 census in Millville, Jo Daviess County, shows Thomas Bolton and his family. His wife Jane was born in New York State, but he and all their children but the youngest are shown as born in Canada. The Boltons have not been researched for this tree in any detail. An early baptism performed by John Bethune of the Presbyterian Church at Williamstown suggested at first that Abraham and Leah Bolton were Presbyterian. Baptisms for such later children that we can find were performed in one of the Anglican parishes in the Eastern Townships. Microfilm reel M1496 provides this information. The reel is entitled: Registers of the Parishes of Williamsburgh, Matilda, Osnabruck, and Edwardsburgh. The names for most of the children were cast in Latin form. Margaret's name is shown as Margretha. She was born 24 April, 1795, and baptised 23 August, 1795. The pages do not tell us where the service was performed, but, most likely, Margaret was baptised in Edwardsburgh. The only other comment that we may make is that Leah Sax Bolton, Margaret's mother, petitioned for land in 1793 as the daughter of a Loyalist. She shows her father as John Sax. He may be John Saxe of Vermont who was persecuted for his Tory sympathies. Another petition has been seen which was made by Leah and shows her as the foster daughter of Henry Jackson who was, apparently, her mother's brother. The results of these petitions have not been researched in any depth, however we find on page 109 of the History of Leeds & Grenville, Ontario, from 1749-1879, Thad. W.H. Leavitt (Global Heritage Press, 2005 edition), a listing of township grants in Edwardsburg Township. On concession one, we find on lot 17, west half, dated May 1st, 1797, Abraham Bolton. The acreage is not stated, but would be, presumeably 100 acres. Then on lot 18, east half, dated May 17, 1802, we find Henry Jackson. This is shown to be 100 acres. These are each, essentially, half lots. The Bolton and Jackson properties are apparently contiguous. |
