Marriages by George Jos. Ryerse, Regular Baptist Church, Charlotteville, #127 (p. 188 & 189)
Nelson Vail, of Woodhouse, to Mary Vrooman, of Niagara. 4 Feb 1833, by banns. Rev. Ryerse. Wit. Robert Hamp & Tho's Vrooman.

The marriage record does not tell us where the marriage was performed. Witness Robert Hamp is probably Robert Kemp.
DeathShe died on 20 April 1863 at age 51.
BurialShe was buried at Culver Cemetery, Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co..
NoteMary Vrooman and her husband Nelson Vail appear together in the 1851 and 1861 censuses in Woodhouse Township in Norfolk County. The two of them are shown in 1861 without family. The 1851 census shows a William Vail in their household, age 23. A sure record for William has not been found later.

The record provides us with some conflicts of dates and age. The 1851 census (really 1852), shows their age as of their next birthday (supposedly) as 42 for Nelson and 40 for Mary. The 1861 census shows them as 51 and 49 respectively. At the least, these ages will be approximately correct.

Mary and Nelson are buried in Culver / Collver Cemetery in Townsend Township in Norfolk County. The Norfolk County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription. Nelson has two stones. The apparently earlier one shows his death month and year as March of 1870. The date of death was obviously unreadable at the time of transcription. The later stone provides his death date as March 5, 1870. His death registration, filed about a month after the fact provides a death date of 23 March 1870. It appears as though the readable stone in Culver Cemetery was erected at some time after his death. The death registration date is taken as being the more probable. To this point, an obituary has not been found. The Vails evidently lived in Woodhouse Township, but are buried in Culver which is in Townsend Township.

Mary's stone provides us with a similar problem. The transcription clearly identifies her. It reads: Mary / wife of Nelson Vail / and daughter of / Solomon and Mary / Vrooman / died 20th April, 1863 / aged 36 yrs., 15 days.

Two stones for Mary give her age as 36. The inscription leaves us in no doubt as to her identity, but her age as shown cannot be correct.
