Naomi Jane Vrooman

ID # 1589, (1823-1895)
FatherSolomon Secord Vrooman (1783-1874)
MotherMary Brown (1790-1846)
BaptismNaomi Jane Vrooman was baptized on 7 January 1823.
MarriageShe married Joseph Cathline
DeathShe died on 5 May 1895 at Niagara Township, Lincoln County, Ontario, at age 72.
NoteNaomi had been married, but her husband was either deceased prior to the 1851 census, or they were separated. She appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses with her surname as Catheline, or similar. Her death registration was filed by her brother, Thomas Vrooman. The handwriting is difficult, but, again, appears to be something like Cateline. Naomi's date of death, 5 May 1895, as provided by the Vrooman Family history of 1949 agrees with her date of death as shown on her death registration. Naomi is shown in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses in Niagara Township with the surname Vrooman. Her death registration shows her to be a widow. No marriage registration has been found for Naomi nor a place of burial. It may be mentioned that Dr. W.G. Reive in his Cemeteries and Graves in Niagara (Douglas Robbins, St. Catharines, Ontario, 1991) shows a Helena Alberta Cathiline, daughter of Philip and Mary, died 1874, buried in St. Andrews Cemetery in Niagara Township at the time he recorded it in 1929. This is little help, but does place the name in the township.

Naomi was with her brother Thomas at the time of the 1871 census in Niagara Township. The 1881 census page is badly faded, but it is possible to see that Naomi is still with brother Thomas. In 1891, Naomi is with Thomas, and Emma and John Kerr. Naomi's name is listed on the page following that of Thomas. It should be noted that the pages are out of order on the microfilm and hence out of order with Ancestry.

Something of a further clue has been found with regards to Naomi's family.

Refer to Early Ontario Newspaper Transcription Series/The Niagara Papers, Vol. 1/The Niagara Mail/1843-1860/Birth, Marriages and Deaths/Compiled by W. Craig Burtch. (2008), copies available from Global Heritage Press. and to the Canada West census of 1852 for Niagara Township in Lincoln County. Refer to pages 47 and 61.

Page 47 of Burtch's transcription shows The Mail, Wednesday, June 14, 1854, Obit. a) At Mr. A. B. Vrooman's, Queenston Road, Illerda Cathline, daughter of Mr. Josh Cathline, aged 4 years. (Note that the letter 'h' in Josh is shown as a superscript. It is apparently an abbreviation for Joseph.)

Page 61 of the 1852 census for Niagara Township shows 'Sherda Cathline' (first name ill written and approximate), age 2.

It should be noted that a logical reading of this census places page 61 out of sequence. Walter Vrooman, age 17, appears at the top of the page and should follow logically from the bottom of page 47.

The Niagara Mail entry for Illerda Cathline's first name may or may not be accurate, but the entry on page 61 of the census is badly written and, while close to the Mail obituary in sound, won't be correct. Ancestry has the child's name indexed as Sherda. The first letter looks rather more like a J.

The statistical page (page 48) of the 1851 census, shows Naomi as married. Other entries do indicate that persons were represented as being widowed. Naomi is shown as single in the 1861 census and so this is of little help. We can only say for the moment that her husband was 'Josh' (Joseph) Cathline, trusting to the accuracy of the newspaper account. A land record on an Abstract Index for Niagara Town suggests that his name may have been Joseph Napoleon Cathline.

Unhappily for Naomi, there is a bit more to be told of her story. The following was found in Volume C of the Township of Niagara land records at the Archives of Ontario, reel GSU170181, transaction 13641, a transfer of land from Solomon to his son Thomas Vrooman. In it, and following the legalities of the land transaction, Thomas is enjoined to provide 'room, clothing and necessary meat and lodging' for Naomi Jane Vrooman, referred to as Solomon's 'lunatic daughter' for the rest of her natural life or her recovery.

It appears that Thomas honored his father's request and that he took care of Naomi for over thirty years.

Death Reg. 009884-95 Township of Niagara, Lincoln Co.
Naomi Jane Cateline died May 5th 1895. Age 72, Widow. Informant Thomas Vrooman, Niagara Township. Baptist.

Thomas ordered a funeral for Naomi from Morse and Sons Funeral Home of Niagara Falls and the order is marked paid. The order is dated May 5, 1895. Typically, Morse seems to date the order from the date of the funeral though this isn't stated. The Niagara Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides an online index to the Morse records. Thomas died in 1907 and Morse Funeral Home conducted his funeral as well. Again, we have no place of burial. Logically, Naomi Jane and her brother Thomas are buried in the Field, Vrooman Brown Cemetery near Queenston. We may now say that Thomas is indeed buried there (see notes under Thomas), but the place of burial for Naomi has yet to be found.
