Marriage: a) 'At the residence of the bride's father, on the 13th instant, by Elder Peter Steinhoff, Mr. Henry E. Vrooman, of the Township of Woodhouse - formerly of the Township of Niagara, to Miss Sarah, youngest daughter of Mr. Henry Sterling, of the Township of Townsend.'

By the evidence, the above record is correct and it is confirmed by information given on page 740 of the Sterling Genealolgy. This shows the marriage of Sarah Ann and Henry as being on January 13, 1853.

Confusion reigns if reference is given to the Talbot District marriage register. A transcription of this register is given in The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West, Vol.1, Talbot District, 1837-1857, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai.

The transcription reads: Marriages by Rev'd Peter Steinhoff, Free Communion Baptist Minister, Woodhouse, p. 116 & 117.
Jos. C. Vroman of Woodhouse to Sarah Sterling of Townsend. 13 Jan 1853 by licence. Rev. Steinhoff. Wit. Benson Kemp and Mary Sterling.

Unquote

If we look at the image from the Talbot District Marriage Register as provided by Ancestry (see 1853, page 117) something different appears. This reads:
1853, 13 Jan/H. C. (or E) Vroman of Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Sarah Sterlington, Townsend, Norfolk County. Witnesses Benson Sterling and Mary Kemp.

There is a line drawn through the groom's name, making it difficult to read, but it is the initial H followed by the letter C or E. The image shows the witnesses names correctly. Somehow, the transcription mixed up the surnames. According to the Sterling Genealogy, Benson Sterling was Sarah's brother. Mary Kemp was probably Henry's niece by his sister Margaret. Mary was younger than Henry, but not by many years.

DeathHe died on 22 April 1912 at age 85.
BurialHe was buried on 25 April 1912 at Fairview Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario.
NoteHe Henry Vrooman was enumerated with his brother Daniel's family at Townsend Township in Norfolk County in the 1851 census. He is shown as a school teacher.

By 1861, he and Sarah are present with his family in Niagara Township in Lincoln County and he is shown as a farmer. With them are daughters Larina, age 6 and Ellen, age 2. (The Sterling family history shows their eldest daughter as Larina. The handwriting of the 1861 census page is such that the capital letters S and L are identical.)

Henry is still in Niagara Township in 1871 and here we find daughters Jennie and Sally, but son William, born about 1866, is not noted.

In the 1881 census, apparently all their children are present. They are shown as Rena age 25, Ella age 22, Jennie 18, William 15, and Lilla, or Lillie, 13.

In 1891, Henry and Sarah are still in Niagara Township. With them are son William age 25, and Lilly age 23.

Death reg. 019772-12 Niagara Township, Lincoln Co.

The Niagara Falls cemeteries' web site for Fairview Cemetery shows that Henry is buried in Section B, Plot 0180 and they date his burial to 25 April, 1912.

Sarah Ann Sterling, the wife of Henry Vrooman, had a sister Loretta. She was married to Henry's brother, Adam Brown Vrooman.

Digitized by Microsoft, The Sterling Genealogy, compiled by Albert Mack Sterling in 1909, provides information for the Sterling-Vrooman marriages and the children of these unions. It seems fairly accurate.
