| Baptism | David Allan Hunt was baptized on 8 May 1863 at Derby Twp., Grey County. |

Hunt, 22, bachelor, blacksmith. Methodist. Born Canada, residing Aberdour, Saugeen. Parents James Hunt and Ruth Abell. Catherine Young, 19, spinster, Mennonite. Born Canada, residing Saugeen. Parents Adam Young and Barbara Gobel. Witnesses John Hunt, Saugeen and Cecilia Hunt, Derby. On October 21st, 1885, at Saugeen, by Rev. J. G... illeg. The place of marriage, Saugeen, as shown, probably referred to the township. Saugeen was also the name of the town that became Southampton, though not until 1890, at least so far as a post office name was concerned. Bruce County marriage registrations datelined Southampton do exist at least as early as 1885. Aberdour, perhaps not much larger than a corners, had a post office from 1875 to 1915. It does not now appear to be found on a present day map of Ontario, though it does appear on an antique map of Saugeen Township as provided by McGill University of Montreal. |
| Death | He died on 30 September 1924 at Chapple, Rainy River District, Ontario, at age 61. |
| Burial | He was buried on 2 October 1924 at Stratton, Chapple Twp., Rainy River District. |
| Note | David Hunt is shown with his parents in Derby Township, Grey County, in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. By 1891 he and Catherine, including children John, Fred and Wesley, are in Port Elgin. Birth information for Mabel places the family in Michigan in 1894, but Henry's birth information has the family in Alabama in 1896. Certainly, at the time of the 1900 census, the family is in Pine Grove, Dekalb County, Alabama. David and Catherine are last found in Eldred Township, Cass County, North Dakota, in the 1910 U.S. census. Son Wesley is there in later years. The 1921 Canadian census has David and Catherine in Shenston of Chapple Township in the Rainy River District. In May of 2020, a tree was received from a descendant, a Rev. Mr. Osmundson, that enlarged on the family of David and Catherine. With his permission, some of the information is taken from his tree. Using the tree as a guide, death records were found for David and, in a way, for Catherine, and, considering their travels in the United States, that David finished up in the Rainy River District of Ontario was quite unexpected. Catherine is said to have died in Manitoba in 1962. See notes for Catherine. Death reg. 027928-24 Chapple Twp., Rainy River District David Allan Hunt died Sept 30th, 1924. Age 61 yrs., 4 mos., 21 dys. Married. Born Owen Sound on May 8th, 1863. Length of residence at place of death 4 years. Parents James S. Hunt and Ruth Able, both born Wentworth County. Physician F. H. Bethune of Emo, Ontario. Informant F. A. Hunt, Stratton, Ontario, son. Burial at Stratton October 2, 1924. David's death registration shows his place of birth as Owen Sound. This isn't out of the question, but something like 'near' Owen Sound is probably closer to the truth. The family was in Derby Township at the time of David's birth. A record of baptism would probably tell the tale. Certainly his descendant, Rev. Osmundson, as mentioned above, has his birth in Derby Township, and this should be accurate. |
