Ann Lawrason
ID # 2794, (1797-1880)
| Father | Miller Lawrason (1768-1847) |
| Mother | Elizabeth Purvis (1770-1834) |
| Baptism | Ann Lawrason was baptized in 1797. |
| Marriage | She married John Buck on 27 November 1853 at Talbot District. See The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada / Canada West, Vol. 1, Talbot District, 1837-1857, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, Milton, 2000, kpage 105. Marriages by Rev'd Edwin Clement, Wesleyan Minister, Simcoe. John Buck, of Walpole, to Ann Babcock, of Townsend. 27 Nov. 1853. By Licence. Rev. Clement. Wit. John Lemon and Christiana Lemon. The old Talbot District was probably defunct by 1853, the new administrative area being Norfolk County for purposes of this particular marriage, however the old Talbot District marriage register was evidently still being used. What the register entry does tell us is that by 1853, Ann was residing in Townsend, probably with family members. |
| Marriage | She married Elisha Babcock. |
| Death | She died on 3 May 1880 at Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk County. |
| Burial | She was buried at Culver Cemetery, Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co.. |
| Note | Our information for Ann Lawrason is minimal, but we have a beginning in Delores MacIntyre's work Some Records of the Lawrason Family. Page 37 describes the half-copy of the letter held by Joyce Wehrstein of St. George. It seems to respond to a query for a possible will for Elizabeth Purves Lawrason and lists the children of Miller and Elizabeth. No dates of birth are given, but Annie, so shown, is listed third in the order of children, After Thomas, but before Robert. From this, on page 63, Mrs. MacIntyre infers a birth year for Annie of 1797 or '98, which would appear to be about right. She further refers to the work of Stuart Lawrason who notes two marriages for Annie. Her first marriage was to a Babcock and the second to a Buck. No given names were mentioned. Annie's brother Robert married a Harriett Babcock and he finished up in Bliss, Michigan. One piece of information that we may note is that the 1851 census in South Dumfries (page 59), shows the household of John Lawrason and included in the list of members is Anny Babcock, age 53. This would place her in the approximate age bracket to make it likely that she is Annie Lawrason, sister of John Purvis Lawrason. A minimal clue that we have to work with is that provided in the 1832 census of the part of Dumfries Township East of the Grand River (see microfilm MS700 reel 1), The census lists heads of households only and relates them to concession and lots numbers. With some other statistical data, it shows the numbers of persons, male and female, over and under 16, living in each household. The enumerator listed the household of Elisha Babcock immediately prior to the household of Miller Lawrason. Why this should have been so isn't clear, for Elisha is shown as residing at concession 5, lot 2, while Miller is shown at concession 4, lot 4. (We may note that Miller apparently holds 150 acres of this 200 acre lot while Robert Lawrason, who we must believe to be Miller's son, holds 50 acres of the same lot.) The Babcock household shows 8 persons residing there. This breaks down by one male and one female over 16 and two males and four females under 16. For the moment, and we cannot say so with certainty, but Elisha has a young family and it is reasonable that the two adults are Elisha and Annie. (For the following, see C-1620, Vol. 31, bundle B 4, petition 146 - images 00843 - 00850. An Elisha Babcock and his brother Severus petition Peter Russell in 1799 for a grant of land in Oxford Township. This is near present day Ingersoll. It is not at all clear from endorsements on the file that Elisha was successful. Elisha and Severus seek to bring in their father and his family, which includes 11 children. Elisha also states that he has a wife. We have no certainty, but this Elisha Babcock is at least possibly a family member of the Elisha Babcock who married Annie Lawrason. Given age differences, he is not at all likely the same person, even considering the possibility of Ann Lawrason being a second wife.) Whether or not the foregoing information is pertinent, at some point, some of the family of Ann and Elisha moved to Norfolk County. We may support this with a transcription of Culver Cemetery in Townsend Township as provided by the Norfolk County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. In Row G of this cemetery, we find the following Stone 2. Nelson K./son of/Elisha & Ann Babcock/who died May 1, 1858/AE 26 yrs. 1 mo. 18 dy./ William/son of/Elisha & Ann Babcock/Who died July 20, 1854/AE 20 yr. 15 dy. Stone 3. In Memory of/Ann/wife of/John Buck/Died May 3, 1880/Aged 81 yrs & 3 mo's. Beyond the 1832 census for East Dumfries and his will, we have little information for Elisha Babcock. We have considerably more for John Buck and notes for John appear under his name. For the present, what does provide us with satisfying evidence for the relationship of John Buck and Annie is as follows. The newspaper, the British Canadian of Simcoe, Ontario, has this on page 3 of their 12 May, 1880, issue: Buck -- At the residence of Mr. Benson Sterling, Woodhouse, on the 3rd inst., Ann, relict of John Buck of Hullsville, in her 82nd year. The above appears on microfilm N186 reel 6. We do know that Benson Sterling married Ann Eliza Babcock. We have no death registrations for either Ann or John Buck, but we do have the following. From the Sterling Genealogy, Vol two, Library Edition, Grafton Press, New York, 1909, see page 740: Benson Sterling, b. in Townsend, Ontario, Can., Dec. 1, 1834; m. Oct. 30, 1856, Ann Eliza Babcock, b. Feb. 26, 1838, dau. of Elisha and Anna (Laweasan) Babcock. Mr. Sterling was a farmer until 1886 when he removed to Bay City, Mich. he has been sexton of the First M.E. church there since 1889. Annie's maiden name is misspelled, but there can be no doubt at this point that her name was Lawrason. The notes for John Buck are under his own name. |
