John S. Babcock and Isobel Hamilton, both of Dumfries.
Witnesses John Laurason and Samuel S. Doud.

This marriage does not appear in a Gore District marriage register. The available registrations in the Gore pick up in 1842. It is believed that there was an earlier register prior to 1842 that has not survived. The above microfilm is an extract of records from the First Presbyterian marriage books. The United Church Archives also has these records microfilmed on LCM 30 and 31.

The pages of the First Church marriage book, as it appears on the microfilm is of mixed clarity so far as readability is concerned for there is some fading. John and Isobel's marriage record however is quite decipherable. The handwriting is probably that of Rev. James Strang.

NoteHe John Babcock appears in Dumfries Township in the 1851 census. He is shown as age 31 and a farmer. Since the 1851 census was not taken until January of 1852, and the age requested was as of the next birthday, we take a birth year of 1821 as an approximation.

With John is wife Esibell, age 29, and children:
Warner, 11
Edward, 10
Wilder, 6
Jane, 4

John's wife was actually Isabella, maiden name Hamilton. The Gore District Marriage Register shows the marriage of David Tansley to Isabella Babcock, both of Beverly, on 13 May, 1856. She is with David in the 1861 census with the beginning of several children she had by David. She died in 1897 and is buried with David in Sheffield Cemetery and a transcription of their stone, provided by the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, shows her maiden name as Hamilton. What clinches her as the widow of John Babcock is that in the 1861 census in Beverly, present with her and David are two Babcock children, Wilder, shown above, and Margaret Ann, evidently born after the 1851 census.

As to the death of John Babcock. We do not have a sure record of his passing, but there is an unhappy obituary that appears on page 182, volume 3 of More Notices from Methodist Newspapers, 1830-1857, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2010. The obituary is extracted from the Canada Christian Advocate, dated July 5, 1854. It refers to the death of a John Babcock of Galt (Galt is at the north end of Dumfries Township), 'a few days ago'. Basically, he was run over by a train. Again, that this record refers to John, husband of Isabella Hamilton, is uncertain, but two years later Isabella married for a second time, so it is entirely possible.

A place of burial for John Babcock has not been found. The 1851 census shows John as a Methodist. The three cemeteries in Galt were parochial - two being Presbyterian and one Anglican. Mountview Cemetery was not established until 1869. It is possible that John was buried in St. George Cemetery, which was originally a Methodist cemetery. It is also possible that he is buried in the Pioneer Presbyterian Cemetery at St. George. A 7 year old Robert Babcock was buried in this cemetery in 1830 and he is probably John's brother. Robert's stone, appears in a transcription done by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. Their first work is undated on the 2007 re-transcription. Apparently Robert's stone wasn't visible in these later years.
