| Marriage | She married Peter Columba Lawrason, son of James Lawrason and Laney Bauslaugh, on 25 June 1866 at Grey County. MS248 Reel 6 Vol. 13, page 131 Grey County The following is in a list of marriages solemnized by Isaac Baker, Wesleyan Minister. Peter Columba Lawrason, 26, born Canada, residing Brant (Township). Parents James and 'Jane' Lawrason. Charlotte Cunningham, 26, born Canada, residing Brant. Parents William and Jane Hall. Witness William Scott of Brant. On June 25th, 1866. The county marriage registrations from this era do not typically state the marital status of the parties. From Charlotte's name as given, however, and noting the names of her parents, she was evidently a widow. Unquestionably, this marriage registration appears in the Grey County marriage register. Brant Township is located in Bruce County. Rev. Isaac Baker was located in Thornbury in Grey County from 1866 to 1869. It is possible that he traveled and performed marriages away from his charge, and that he simply recorded the marriage in the Grey County book. Thornbury is some distance from Brant Township in Bruce County and there were likely Wesleyan clergy closer. Probably, the bride and groom were married in or near Thornbury and so the entry in the Grey County marriage register would be correct. Barring a newspaper article, we can't be sure. |
| Note | It is evident from the marriage registration for Peter and Charlotte that she had been previously married. From available indexes, we find that she was married to Samuel Cunningham on 14 March, 1861, in Bruce County. Her residence was Brant Township and his Greenock Township. Samuel went to an early grave and photos of his gravestone in Greenock United Church Cemetery appear on both Find-a-Grave and CanGenWeb. The stone is very worn and barely readable in the photos. Both transcriptions, however, place his death as being in 1861. This doesn't reasonably work. See notes for Sam Cunningham. Peter and Charlotte were married in Grey County (apparently) in 1866. When we find the family in the 1871 census in Brant Township, Bruce County, they have with them: Ophelia, age 9; Samuel Hall, age 7; James W., age 4; and Theodore W., age 2. The family name is shown as Laurison, and all the children are shown with the surname Laurison. Ophelia died at 18, but we find Samuel Hall Cunningham in later years and his marriage in 1886 in Stratford to Alice Drummond specially names him as Samuel Hall Cunningham. We must believe that the first two children in the 1871 census list are Cunninghams and the latter two are Lawrasons. A place of death and burial for Peter and Charlotte has yet to be found. In 1881, the family was in Blenheim Township; in 1891 and 1901, the family was in Stratford. See notes under Peter for one further record. |
