| Note | Between the birth registration for Lanie, her baptismal record, and the 1871 and 1881 censuses, we run into conflicting information. Birth reg. 016761-71 Brant Twp., Bruce Co. Lena Almeda born January 7, 1871. Parents Peter C. Lawrason, sawyer, and Charlotte Hall. Informant G. Landerkin of Hanover (in Grey County) who was also the doctor. Parents Peter & Charlotte, Residence Wolverton, Birth place Almeda, Birth date 1871-01-07, Baptismal date 1873-08-24, Baptismal place Wolverton, Minister Tucker, Rev. S. First, since we have a birth registration placing the child's birth in Bruce County, we may say that she was born in Brant Township in Bruce County. Second, since the parents named the child Lena Almeda, we can dismiss the 'birth place' Almeda. This is probably Lena's, or Lanie's, middle name. Third, the baptismal record does name the child Lanie May. Lanie seems a reasonable name since it was the name of Peter's mother. Add to that, the 1881 census names her as Lanie. Since the birth registration and the baptismal record agree with the date of the child's birth, we are on safe ground saying that they are one and the same child. The logical conclusion is that the parents decided on a name change after Lanie's name was registered, but before she was baptized. (This is not unheard of.) Hence, Lanie May is probably the name for the child that Peter and Charlotte settled on. |
