| Note | The information for the baptism of Lawrence Corson is taken from Vital Records of Upper Canada / Canada West, Vol. 1: Part 3, Niagara District, 1816-1866, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2005, which appears on page 6. The baptism, done at Niagara in 1816, by Robert Addison, Minister of Niagara (St. Mark's Anglican Church), reads as follows: 3 Jan 1816, Lawrence Corson (of riper years) This is immediately followed, same date, by the listing for the baptism of Barnabas, son of Lawrence and Lydia Corson. See notes under Lydia. Of course, 'riper years' indicates that, for Lawrence, this was an adult baptism. For the burials of Lawrence and Lydia we have two sources, the first being Annals of the Forty, Vol. 4, The Grimsby Historical Society, 1953, the brief history appearing on pages 36 and 37 being contributed by Damaris Chase, and OGS publication 3379, Beamsville First Baptist Cemetery, Niagara Peninsula Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The information for the latter publication is based on transcriptions done in 1964 and in 1987. The publication is dated December of 1987. The Annals tell us that stones from the Baptist Churchyard at Beamsville were removed and piled at the back of Mount Osborne Cemetery at Beamsville. A Mr. Bartlett copied names from the stones and little more is said of it. The OGS transcription tells a fuller story and provides us with updated information. According to this, an 'extensive rehabilitation' of the cemetery was done by the Beamsville council in 1932 and most of the stones were removed and apparently placed at Mount Osborne Cemetery. Later, the stones were removed to a 'safer location'. Apparently, the stones were finally returned to the Beamsville First Baptist Cemetery grounds in 1985. The 1964 and 1987 transcriptions were done by Corlene Taylor. One transcription tells us that Lawrence Corson died on 3 December, 1869, he was aged 75 years, 8 months, 19 days. We do not calculate Lawrence's date of birth from this, however. The contribution to the May 1996 issue of Notes From Niagara by Corson Ellis and in which he states that he is working from a family bible and Lawrence's date of birth which he gives as April 24, 1794, is such that we must accept it. Apparently, Lawrence and Lydia's gravestones are flat on a concrete base. Lawrence's stone is only partially present - the upper portion. Beneath is a stone bearing the inscription: Restored by C.P. Marlatt/Grandson. A photo of this is provided by Find-a-Grave. Lawrence's death in December of 1869 should have been the occasion for a death registration. None has been found. |
