NoteHe The 1851 census, so far as John Corson is concerned, is of interest. He is shown as a farmer in Westminster Township in Middlesex County. The 1851 census was not taken in Ontario until January of 1852, mostly, and most enumerators simply provided the age of the person as of their next birthday, which is essentialy what was asked, which usually meant later in 1852. The Corson enumerator took down the age of everyone on the page as of their next birthday, but, unusually, also the date of the birthday, which is to say the day and the month. John is shown as being 52 as of his next birthday, which is on September 24. Consequently, we must believe him to be born in the year 1800.

John's wife Elizabeth died in 1860. Hence, in the 1861 census he is shown as a widower. With him on this census are Sarah E. Griffith, age 28, his daughter who was at the time a widow; Emily Corson, age 18; and Ellen Hollis, age 14. Ellen is said to be a member of the family, but her place in the family is not presently known.

Damaris Chase, in her work The Canadian Corson Family, A short-form genealogy, rev. Sept. 83, on page 10, has a substantial history for John Corson. She evidently had access to family members who were able to provide marriage certificates from their historical papers. The marriage certificate for John and his wife Elizabeth shows a marriage date of 8th May, 1823. Also quoted is the marriage registration for John's second wife, Mary Mckeller, age 43, maiden name McCormack. This marriage took place on 18 October, 1866, in Westminster Township.

The 1871 census shows John Courson, store keeper, age 71, in South Dorchester Township, Elgin County. His wife is shown as Mary Ann, age 46, born Ireland. With them are Adah McKeller, evidently Mary Ann's daughter, age 17, and Allexander McKeller, age 24, a blacksmith.

By 1881, John and Mary A., ages 80 and 55, are in the village of Dresden, in Bothwell, actually Camden Township in Kent County. With them still is Mary's daughter Adah Mckeller, age 27.

According to the Chase account, John and Mary Ann's marriage did not end well. She tells that by the time John wrote his will on 19 February, 1890, he was living in London and he and Mary Ann were legally separated.
