The Lodi News of Sept 5, 2004, has a story by Ralph Lea and Christi Kennedy. It's entitled Canadian Hannibal Coleman was Lodi's first peace officer. With the article is a photo of Hannibal. He had a magnificent moustache. He became an elected constable of Elkhorn Township in 1900.

According to the article, Hannibal first came to California to be with his brother Artaxerxes in 1875 and he appears with Artaxerxes in the 1880 census at Elkhorn Township in San Joaquin County. He returned to Canada, possible after the death of his father in 1882, but in April of 1883 married Anna Davidson in Freelton. They must have returned to California almost immediately for the 1900 census shows Anna's year of entry to the United States as 1883 and their first born, Elmer, is shown as being born in California. The 1900 census in West Lodi, San Joaquin County, shows Hannibal as a constable.

While we take our list of children for Hannibal and Anna from the 1900 census taken at West Lodi in San Joaquin County, we also have a copy of a letter written in 1967 and sent to a Kynoch cousin. It was penned by Elmer, son of Hannibal, and it lists his siblings and gives something of there then status. Most were by this time deceased.

Elmer also tells something of Artaxerxes family, though it is mainly a list of his sons.
