Margaret Fleming

ID # 4209, (1829-1911)
FatherJohn Fleming (1801-1835)
MotherMargaret Dobbie (1804-1883)
BirthMargaret Fleming was born on 15 November 1829 at Shieldhill, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
MarriageShe married William Colvin, son of Andrew Colvin and Agnes Law, on 24 September 1852.
The date for the marriage of William and Margaret is taken from the Colvin family bible. It does not state where the marriage took place. We know that a Presbyterian church was present in Glen Morris from 1853 at least. They may have been married in Glen Morris, though Paris is also a possibility.

DeathShe died on 22 January 1911 at Galt, Ontario, at age 81.
BurialShe was buried at Glen Morris Cemetery.
NoteShe Of interest to a study of the history of Margaret Fleming and her husband William Colvin is their record in the 1851 census. This census was taken in South Dumfries, but the presence of certain family names makes it obvious that the page being examined was recorded in Glen Morris. There, as mentioned, William is present as a blacksmith with his brother James, also a blacksmith, and their sister Jenet. Four households away and on the same page are listed Gaven Fleming, store keeper, age 25 and born in Scotland, and Margaret Fleming, age 22 and born in Scotland. Since we know that Gaven married Margaret Gray Lapraik on December 21, 1852 (see Warner & Beers History of Brant County, 1883, page 334), and since this census was taken no later than January of 1852, it seems safe to say that the Margaret present with Gavin was his sister Margaret and that Fleming was her maiden name. Also, on the next page, a statistical page, they are both shown as being single. The Colvin family bible tells us that William and Margaret were married on September 24, 1852. It does not tell us where they were married.

Margaret's birth year as shown in this tree is 1829 is in accord with the 1901 census taken at Galt. This is in conflict with her death registration which gives her birth as October of 1828. The 1901 census has a legibility problem, but it gives her birth place as Scotland and shows the year of her coming to Canada, apparently written as 1831.

Her death registration, 031182-11, written at Galt, gives her maiden name and reads: Margaret Fleming, died January 22, 1911, date of birth October 1828, age 82, born Scotland, place of death Ainslie Street, Galt, widow, father's name John Fleming, mother's name not shown. The informants were Dr. D. Buchanan and A.J. Colvin. (Dr. Buchanan was Andrew Colvin's brother-in-law.)

Margaret was living with her son Andrew at the time of the 1901 census. Since her death address is given as Ainslie Street it is most likely that she was still living with Andrew and his family at the time of her death, for Andrew lived on Ainslie Street. Dr. Dan Buchanan lived next door. The Colvins and Buchanans were long gone from Ainslie Street when this researcher was born, but there are surviving photos showing the houses in spring when the flood came down and the waters of the Grand River were almost up to the level of the front verandas.

It has been found that Margaret married a second time. Her second husband was William Loudon, or Louden, a shoemaker. Our only source for this information is the Dumfries Reformer. No marriage registration has been found in the county marriage registers. Margaret is with William Louden, in South Dumfries near or in Glenmorris, at the time of the 1871 census. With them are Margaret's sons William, age 13, and Andrew, age 10. William Loudon's age is given as 49. He was born in Scotland.

At the time of the 1881 census, Margaret is with her son Andrew in Glenmorris and said to be married. William Louden, apparently under another roof, is also in Glenmorris. It's possible that they were recorded with her at their residence and he at his place of work, but this seems unlikely.

In 1891, Margaret is in Glen Morris and appears to be on her own. A William Loudon, born Scotland and a bootmaker, is in Zorra West in Oxford County. He appears to be Margaret's husband, but, on July 30, 1889, and if he is the same person, he married a Mary Spraggs. William and Margaret may have divorced, but a record has yet to be found.
