Note | He Our information that Malcolm Campbell was a son of John and Margaret Campbell is inferential. It is based on the fact that they farmed land later owned by William Buchanan and his wife Catherine Harvie. The death notice of Catherine Campbell Harvie in the Dumfries Reformer makes it clear that her family's former land was being farmed by William Buchanan. Also, Catharine Campbell and her husband Alexander Harvie Jr. had a son that they named Malcolm, apparently after Catharine's brother. Something of the 1851 agricultural census for South Dumfries has survived. Malcolm Campbell appears there in and is shown as located on concession 5, lot 19. The 1842 Upper Canada census for Dumfries Township shows John Campbell on this same lot. Since John died in 1847, we must believe that Malcolm took over the farm. As mentioned under notes for Malcolm's wife Margaret, looking over their household as it appears in South Dumfries in the 1851 census, it may be that their marriage was a second marriage for at least one of them. Also, note that for the moment this tree shows Malcolm and his sister Catharine as children of John G. Campbell and his wife Margaret. There were almost certainly more as an examination of First Church, Galt, marriage records would indicate. A Robert Carrick married Christian Campbell in 1837. One of the witnesses was Malcolm Campbell. Also in 1837, a George Campbell of Dumfries married a Hope Wood of Dundas. Other than this being a First Church marriage, we have no other identifying context. However, still later, in November of 1837, and both of Dumfries, a John Chisholm married a Jennett Campbell and John and Malcolm Campbell were witnesses. There may also have been a Peter Campbell, perhaps a brother to Malcolm. All of which requires more research. Malcolm and Margaret were obviously connected with First Church in Galt in early years. The Campbell farm was located a short distance from Glen Morris where a Presbyterian Church was built and while the building was completed in 1849, there was a clergyman attending the village and holding church services in the local school house. Given the distance to Galt, it is probably that Malcolm and Margaret were connected with the Glen Morris church from early years. Certainly, they appear on the communion rolls there as of 1853. Their deaths are recorded there as well. They are buried in the church cemetery. |
