Margaret McKenzie
ID # 5435, (1816-1856)
| Baptism | Margaret McKenzie was baptized in 1816 at United States. |
| Marriage | She married Malcolm Campbell, son of John G. Campbell and Margaret (--?--), on 4 February 1841 at Dumfries Township, Gore District. The following record is from the marriage records of First Church in Galt, Gore District. This does not appear in the surviving Gore District marriage register, for the earliest records appearing therein begin in 1842. GS2987 First Church Marriage Register, nbr. 89. By license in Dumfries, February 4, 1841. Malcolm Campbell and Margaret McKenzie, both of Dumfries. Witnesses Bartholomew Carrick and Margaret Hill. |
| Death | She died on 31 December 1856. |
| Burial | She was buried at Glen Morris Cemetery. |
| Note | Here, to some extent, we extrapolate. Firstly, the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society transcribed the cemetery, the copy of which to hand is undated. The transcription for the grave of Malcolm and Margaret reads: Margaret wife of Malcolm Campbell died December 31, 1856, aged 40y's. Malcolm Campbell died June 26, 1858, aged 46y's. Secondly, the Brant County branch of the OGS publication nbr. 163 included Glen Morris Church records of deaths for 1853-1884 The record for Margaret is obscure, but, considering the inscription on her gravestone, clear enough: Campbell, Malcom age 40y date 31 December 1856. Buried Glen Morris. Remarks Married d-abt sunset (Considering the date, this can only be Margaret.) Then, later, we find: Campbell, Malcolm, age 46y, date 26 Jun 1858, Buried Glen Morris. Remarks sd-unspontaneously. No interpretation is given for remarks, though it's reasonable to believe that Margaret died 'about sunset'. Malcolm? Not even a guess. Looking over records for First Church, Galt, it is reasonable that Margaret's maiden name was McKenzie. Rev. Strang conducted a marriage, by license in Dumfries, on February 4, 1841, for Malcolm Campbell and Margaret McKenzie. The witnesses were Bartholomew Carrick and Margaret Hill. 1841 pre-dates the surviving Gore District marriage register and so is not to be found in the district marriages. We have no information as to Margaret's parentage beyond her maiden name. There were three or four McKenzie family's in the Beverly and Dumfries Townships from earliest days and it is entirely possible that they were all related. Malcolm and Margaret Campbell appear in South Dumfries in the 1851 census. This census shows Malcolm and Margaret as 40 and 38 respectively and both as being born in the United States. The household shows a sizeable household with a range of names, ages adult to infants, that it is possible that Margaret's marriage to Malcolm may have been a second marriage. The names include Carricks, Campbells, McDonalds, and an Irvin. |
