NoteWe take James Buchanan's date of birth from the family page of his brother Theron's bible. The page is tattered and the year of James' birth unreadable, although the day and month are clear enough. The year, 1834, is approximated from census information, but is probably accurate considering that his baptism is shown as November 19th, 1834, at First Church in Galt.

The Buchanan siblings appear to have been baptised at First Church in Galt, at the time a Presbyterian Church, in two batches. Four were baptised on November 5th, 1834, and five on November 19th, though the date in the margin is almost obscure. This appears on microfilm LCM-30 which is to be found at the United Church of Canada Archives.

At the time of the 1860 census James is in Burlington, Coffey County, Kansas and he is married to Jane, age 22. She, as James, is said to have been born in Canada. They have one son Edgar who is said to have been born in Kansas. This coincides with information that we have for James' brother Alexander. Alex was said to have been as resident of Kansas at the time of his marriage in 1858, though apparently Alexander returned to live in Canada.

By the time of the 1870 census taken at Lowell, Michigan, Jane is evidently deceased. James is with his wife Margarette, age 26, and his sons Edgar age 11 and Martin (very ill written) age 8 are also present. It isn't clear as to who is Martin's mother, but since he was also born in Kansas and Margarette would have been very young to marry and have him it seems likely that Martin is the son of Jane.

At the time of the 1880 census, James and Margrette are in Vergennes, Kent Count, Michigan.

In 1900, James and Margrette (her name may be rather closer to Maryette) are still in Vergennes, Kent County, Michigan.

By the time of the 1910 census, Margarette must be deceased. James is living with Edgar in Vergennes, Michigan.

By the time of the 1920 census, James is apparently on his own and in a boarding house in Grand Rapids. He is apparently deceased by 1930.

When Alex, brother of James, died in 1916, he remembered James in his will and the location for James was given as Grand Rapids.

The gravestone for James is in Oakwood Cemetery, Lowell, Kent County, Michigan, and a photo of the stone appears on Find-a-Grave. This presents quite a history of James' family. Several family dates are taken from this, including information for a child, Alfred, hitherto unknown.

Oakwood Cemetery was established in 1872. James' wife Jane and son Alfred are commemorated on this stone, though they are probably not buried here. Jane's dates are given as 1837-1874 and Alfred's as 1864-1865. They may be buried in Kansas.
