As usual with registrations of marriages from this era, the exact location of the marriage is not provided. Rosemary Ambrose, however, has extracted marriage announcements from the Dumfries Reformer for the years of 1860-1865. The edition of 15 March, 1865, carries the announcement for the marriage of John and Isabella. It tells that the marriage was held on March 9th, 1865, at the residence of the bride's father, Rosebank, near Doon. Isabella is described as the 3rd daughter of Thomas Henderson. Rosebank will be the name of the farm.

NoteAt the time of the 1871 census, John and Isabella are in Blenheim Township of Oxford County. He is shown as a farmer and they have with them a daughter, Isabella, age 4.

By the time of the 1881 census, they are in Berlin. John is a coal and grain merchant. Their daughter Isabella is 14. She is shown as Bella Y. (Her full name was Isabella Young Moffatt.) Also with them is a son, Nisbet S. Moffatt, age 8. The 1881 census page can be found at Archives Canada. The image is faint, but reasonably readable.

The 1891 census shows the family in Berlin. Bella is shown as 22 and Nisbet as 18.

At the time of the 1901 census,
