ID # 5737, (1808-1890)
BirthJames L. Scott was born in 1808 at Dumfriesshire, Scotland.
MarriageHe married Helen Nichol on 21 March 1834 at Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland.
Familysearch has a database, Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910, FHL microfilm 1,067,971. This is in the form of a transcription from the original image. This shows the following marriage:

James Scot
Helen Mcnichol
Event date 21 Mar 1834
Place Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland.

There are arguments to be made against this as the marriage record of James L. Scott and Helen Nichol, but considering that we are dealing with a small parish, this is probably correct.

DeathHe died on 22 April 1890 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario.
BurialHe was buried at Section 2, Mountview Cemetery, Galt.
NoteHe A record of the James Scott family in Tundergarth, Dumfries-shire, in the 1841 census has not been found. Considering that there are substantial portions of this census in available images for England that are unreadable this is probably also the case for Scotland. (Census and a range of Old Parish Records are available from the Scottish Government by subscription.)

Ancestry does provide a transcription of the Scott family household as they are found in the 1851 census at Tundergarth. This shows James Scott as a joiner master (carpenter) employing two men. It seems reasonable that the two men listed in the household following the names of the children, Robert Maxwell, age 17, and Fergus Baird, age 20, are the two employees. We may safely say that James and Helen's daughter Jane, who is shown as 16 in the 1851 census, married Robert Maxwell. Whether she married Robert while they were still in Scotland or after they came to Canada remains unknown, but their eldest child, Ellen, age 5, is shown as being born in Canada.
