| Note | Familysearch has a database entitled Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, FHL microfilm 1,067,971. It reads: Daughter Elisabeth Sanders Scott, Christening place Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland Birth date 21 April, 1850 at Tundergarth, Dumfries Scotland Parents James Scott and Helen Nicoll Note that her parents had a daughter Elizabeth in 1848. Considering that a second child was named Elisabeth, or Elizabeth, in 1850, we must believe the first Elizabeth to be dead, the death occuring almost certainly in Scotland. Ancestry provides a transcription only of the 1851 census at Tundergarth and Elizabeth is shown as Betsy, age 11 months. The 1901 and 1911 censuses at Galt, tells that Elizabeth came to Canada in 1855 By 1861, the family is in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, and Elizabeth is shown as Betsy, age 11. (as of her next birthday). By 1871, the family is in North Dumfries Township of Waterloo County and Elizabeth is shown as Betsy S., age 20. This will be her age not as of her next birthday but as it was when the enumerator came to call. The odd record suggests that Elizabeth's middle initial was L, but the handwriting is questionable, and in any event the 1871 census shows her middle initial as S very clearly. Elizabeth marred James Moffatt in 1876. Death reg. 033966-26 Galt, Waterloo Co. Elizabeth Moffatt died May 21st, 1926 at 243 Main St. East. Widowed. Aged 76 yrs., 1 mo. Born Scotland April 21st (year not shown). At place of death 34 years. In Canada 70 years. Father John Scott, born Scotland, mother's name not given. Physician Dr. C. R. Cumming, Galt. Informant Marshall McCormick, Galt, son-in-law. Burial Galt, May 23rd, 1926. The name of Elizabeth's father in her death registration is shown as John Scott. On her marriage registration, she shows her parents as James Scott and Ellen Nicol. |
