|Note||The Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a transcription of the cemetery at Jerseyville in Ancaster. This indicates that the Jerseyville area was the home of earlier Hendershot family members. Peter and Jane Eliza were in Ancaster at the time of the 1861 and 1871 censuses. At some point thereafter they moved to Saltfleet Township where they were for the 1881 census. By 1891, they were in Barton Township and they are buried in Burkholder United Church Cemetery in Barton Township. This is now a part of the city of Hamilton.|
Death reg. 028637-01 Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co.
Peter James Hendershott died Dec. 26, 1900, at Concession 4, lot 49. Age 69. Born Canada. Farmer. Physician and informant G. D. Fanner.
The Hendershots had been residing in Barton by this time and Jane is in Barton with daughter Melissa (Martin) as of the 1901 census. Death registrations from this era aren't very informative, but lot 49 on the 4th concession is of some assistance. The Alphabetical Business Directory of 1895 for several counties, including Wentworth, shows an S. J. Hendershot at this lot number in Ancaster Township and he is a tennant with postal address Galt. Since Galt is at some distance, S. J. Hendershot is evidently not a resident on this lot. By the 1891 directory a Benjamin Smith is said to be on this lot.
