| Note | We show Elizabeth's maiden name as Amor. This is based on how her name is shown on some of the death registrations of her daughters. Other spellings are given, though 'Amor' seems to have the edge and so is shown as such here. Elizabeth is shown in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. censuses as being born in Canada as is her husband. Their children, beginning with Mary born in approximately 1866, are all born in Michigan. William and Elizabeth may have been married in Canada West or in Michigan, but a marriage registration for them has not been found. Elizabeth's mother, Mary 'Aymor' is evidently buried in West Haven Cemetery. She died in 1874, and does provide an alternative spelling to the name. Elizabeth appears in the 1851 census in South Dumfries, Brant County, with her mother and siblings. The family name is shown as Amour. The Smith family lived in the extreme west end of Beverly Township. This borders South Dumfries Township, and William's parents, Samuel and Adelia, are buried in St. George Cemetery, which is in South Dumfries. William and Elizabeth probably knew each other from early days. |
