| Note | Familysearch presents the 1842 census images for Dumfries Township (prior to the divisions of North and South). They show this as St. David's Ward, Toronto, quite simply because, what with the header being torn off, for some reason Library & Archives Canada identifies it as a Toronto ward. Ignore this. Unquestionably, this is Dumfries Township. A Thos. Amor appears on the first page of this census. Unfortunately, the appearance of his name has only just survived. The page is torn in such a way that we cannot tell the number of lot or concession whereon he resides, though he does not own the property. The owner (or mortgage holder) is shown as Walter Dickson. Probably, Thomas is on the 6th concession, but this is a guess based on the next property holder being on the 6th. Thomas is shown as a farmer. Most of the Amor family has yet to be found in the 1861 Canadian census. Son James does appear, however, in West Williams Township in Middlesex County. Almost certainly more than son James was present there for at least a few years. Daughter Ann was married in Middlesex County (probably in West Williams) in 1861 to William Loomis. She died in 1863 and her gravestone in Sylvan United Church Cemetery shows her to be the wife of William Loomis and the daughter of Thos. and Mary Amor. As mentioned under notes for Thomas' wife Mary, she, with her children, appear in the 1851 census in South Dumfries Township, Brant County. The family is described as Methodist. For this era, this could mean either Wesleyan Methodist or Episcopal Methodist. (The New Connection and Primitive Methodists are also a possibility, though there is no church for these in the area.) There was an Episcopal Methodist Church at Troy in Beverly Township. The Episcopal Methodists were an American brand of Methodism. Given that Thomas and Mary were from England, the English brand, Wesleyan, seems more likely to have been their family's affiliation. There were Wesleyan Methodists at St. George in South Dumfries and this seems the more likely church to consider for their attendance. Their children, however, do not appear in the Wesleyan Methodist baptisms as listed. These records, however, are a bit hit and miss. Some of the clergy were obviously attentative to returning the baptism lists; others were not. West Williams Township in Middlesex County is at some remove from South Dumfries. West Williams borders Bosanquet Township of Lambton County and is not far from Lake Huron. Since wife Mary is shown as a widow in the 1851 census in South Dumfries, we must believe that Thomas Amor was previously deceased. A place of burial for Thomas has not been found. The index as provided by the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid appears to indicate a burial in Sylvan United Church Cemetery in West Williams, but in fact is only recording daughter Ann Amor Loomis' gravestone whereon he is shown as her father. |
