| Note | See Burial Records and Notations of William Dalton, 1845-1916, Douglas A. Robbins, St. Catharines, Ontario, 1991, page 3. William Dalton was the sexton at Drummond Hill Cemetery from 1876 to 1916. The sexton prior to Dalton's time was Emmanual Pidgeon. When Dalton took over the job, he borrowed Pidgeon's notes from Mrs. Pidgeon and copied them. They were in some disarray and incomplete, but burials for the year 1848 are clear enough. Pidgeon dates what we must believe to be Haggai Cook's burial to November 4, 1848. He is said to be age 75 and his birth year of 1773 is calculated from this. That this was a burial date agrees with such information as is to be found in the index of Morse Funeral Home records. The first record in the Morse index is for November 2 of the year and probably has to do with an order for the funeral. It may well be that Haggai died on that date, but probably no earlier than November 1. Pidgeon, and later Dalton, do seem to have been recording the burial dates - which was the work for which they were responsible. This record is for Drummond Hill Cemetery, in the village of Drummondville as it was known at the time. This in turn was in Stamford Township of the old Niagara District of Canada West, but which was shortly to become a part of Welland County when the old district system was ended. The City of Niagara Falls Cemeteries lists Cook family burials in Drummond Hill and shows old, worn stones for Marsena Cook and his wife. Evidently, the gravestone for Haggai has not survived so there is no photo to be found. Dr. W. G. Reive visited and transcribed much of this cemetery in 1929 and did record the grave of Haggai's son Marsena. He does not note Haggai's grave, however. (This information is also from a Robbins publication, Dr. W. G. Reive Collection Cemeteries and Graves in Niagara, 1991.) Janet Carnochan did some earlier transcriptions of a number of Niagara area cemeteries, but she does not reference the Cooks. Where some information is to be found is in the Niagara Historical Society publication nbr. 22. This presents some graves as transcribed by an Ernest Green and published on December 11, 1911. This is entitled Some Graves on Lundy's Lane. What follows is a quote from the stone, plus a bit of history: 'Haggai Cook, born October 27th, 1773, died November 1st, 1848, aged 75 years.' 'Sarah, wife of Haggai Cook, born April 14th 1777, died January 7th, 1813, in her 36th year.' Haggai Cook was in Captain Grant's company of the 2nd Lincoln militia in the war of 1812-14. The names of ten other Cooks are to be found in the old militia rolls. Haggai was an early Freemason and his grave-stone bears many emblems of that craft. Sarah, wife of Haggai Cook, was a daughter of James and Eve Durham. Unquote Green makes one other statement to do with Haggai Cook and that is to the effect that his parents were Robert Cook and Martha Skinner. This has not been researched. As mentioned above, that Haggai Cook died on November 1st, 1848, is reasonable given the Morse Funeral Home's index extracts. Since these were probably not available to Ernest Green, we will guess that he either was able to transcribe Haggai and Sarah's gravestone himself, or had access to an earlier transcription. |
