England, Devon, Parish Registers, 1538-1912.
This tells (transcription) that Samson Shepherd married Mary Ann Heard in Devon in 1813.
|Death||She died on 30 March 1871.|
|Burial||She was buried at St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery, Niagara Town.|
|Note||A death registration per se for Mary Ann Sheppard has not been found. The Archivist at St. Mark's has been contacted and the church shows no burial record for Mary Ann. It is understood that if another church held the funeral and burial service, St. Mark's then would have no record.|
What we may say is that the page for deaths in the previous 12 months as found in the 1871 census for Niagara Township shows a Mary 'Jane' Sheppard dying in March. Since the 1871 census was begun in April, we must believe that she died in March of 1871.
This is in conflict with the Niagara Ontario Genealogical Society's transcription of St. Mark's. This shows her death as 30 March 1821. The family was not in Canada in 1821. The Archivist kindly forwarded a photograph of her gravestone. It is badly worn and was no doubt so at the time the OGS did the transcription. We must believe that this represents a death date of 30 March, 1871. The inscription 30 March is quite clear. The inscription also tells us that Mary Ann was a native of Plymouth, Devon, in England.
The death registration of daughter Caroline who died in Toronto in 1911 tells that her parents were Sampson Sheppard and Mary Hilard. Familysearch, however, provides a transcription of a marriage record for Sampson Shepherd as it appears in the Devon Parish Registers, 1538-1912. This dates Sampson's marriage to Mary Heard in Devon in 1813. Pending further information, Mary Ann's maiden name is shown here as Heard.
