Isabella Spark Christening date 26 Dec 1820
Christening place Swinton and Simprin, Berwick, Scotland
Birth date 12 Nov 1820
Parents William Spark and Isabella Lindsay.
Isabella Sparks and her husband Robert Delgaty did not come to Canada with her parents. One census document shows the Sparks family as coming to Canada in 1848. This is not correct, for Robert and Isabella Delgaty are in the Scottish census for the year of 1851.
Robert Delgaty was still living at the time of the 1901 census in Stanley Township in Huron County and this shows him coming to Canada in 1851. Betimes, these statements can be shown to be not entirely accurate, but Isabella and Robert are indeed in Blenheim Township of Oxford County, Canada West, when the 1851 census was begun in January of 1852. They appear with Isabella's brother Alexander. An immigration year of 1851 will be entirely accurate.
Past that, the Delgaty story is a bit more complex.
The 1841 Scottish census was taken on the 6th of June. Robert is shown as age 19 and living with his parents. Isabella Sparks Delgaty has yet to be found in this census - she is not living with her parents - yet the marriage of Robert and Isabella is said to have been on the 20th of April, 1841. Their first recorded child, however, Alexander, came along in 1846. Since the other recorded children arrive in normal sequence it may be that the year of Robert and Isabella's marriage has been mistranscribed. The original image might tell a different story.
William Delgaty, born in 1847, is the one child not present with the family at the time of the 1851 Scottish census. We must believe that he did not survive.
At the time of the 1851 census in Canada West, please recall actually taken in January of 1852, Robert and Isabella are in Blenheim Township, Oxford County, with Isabella's brothers Alexander and George Sparks. Youngest daughter Janet, age 2, is in the household. Janet's older siblings, Alexander, age 6, and Isabella, age 3, are with their grandparents, William and Isabella Sparks, also in Blenheim Township.
By the time of the 1861 census, the Delgaty family is in Stanley Township of Huron County, as is Isabella's brother George Sparks. Alexander Sparks is still in Blenheim Township.
As of the 1871 census we find the Robert Delgaty family as well as the families of George and Alexander Sparks all living in Stanley Township. The households must surely have been close, for the census enumerator has listed them cheek by jowl. This has some credibility when the Huron County Atlas of 1879 shows Robert 'Delgatty' on 100 acres of lot 15 in the 12th concession. Also shown are Alexander Sparks on lots 14 and 15 of the 12th and George Sparks on lot 14 of the 12th. (Most township lots closer to the lower lakes were 200 acre lots. It does appear looking at the at the McGill County maps that the Stanley lots were full lots at 100 acres. This needs more research.) Robert Delgaty is shown as having settled in Stanley in 1861.
Familysearch carries Abstract Indexes for Stanley Township and these are available on their website. The Familysearch film number is 008199287. See image 296. This shows Robert 'Delgetty' receiving 100 acres from the Canada Company on 10 Feby. 1854 (registered 29 Dec 1854). This is on Concession 12, lot number 15. No cost is mentioned. The next entry is not until June of 1899 when Robert Delgaty, widower, sells this property to James S. Delgaty.
